Join the National Gallery's art handling department, responsible for the safe movement, preparation, and installation of all art objects within the gallery.

The role of art handler comprises the central function of the Art Handling Department and is critical to its success. As a National Gallery art handler you will be expected to carry out your role to the highest standard whilst observing the philosophy of the department, helping to advance new solutions and promoting its goals. 


Knowledge, skills, experience

  • Demonstrable experience of art handling in either a museum or commercial organisation
  • Practical knowledge of available hanging, transportation, casing and storage options
  • Ability to makes daily decisions about the appropriate procedures related to the handling, movement, and display of works of art ensuring compliance with the department’s conservation standards
  • Drawing on previous experience and knowledge to solve problems of both a technical and logistical nature. Art handling tasks may also present one-off requirements for packing, handling and display solutions, necessitating initiative and creativity
  • Contribute ideas and suggestions to solve specific technical problems where required
  • Proven ability to work well as part of a team, and as an individual
  • Proven verbal and written communication skills in a professional environment. The role includes frequent contact with staff at all levels of the Gallery
  • The post holder needs to demonstrate a calm, patient and considerate approach to all aspects of the work
  • Team working; the post holder will be required to form strong working relationships within a changing team
  • Motivated; maintains focus to see tasks through to the end
