MAST Mayflower Studios are excited to once again be able to offer our Community Exhibition Takeover project, this coming Christmas.

Our takeovers allow us to connect community groups with local artists to create exciting art installations that help us to turn our building into the magical world of our Christmas performance. This year’s exhibition will focus on transforming our building into “Wonderland”, as our performances this Christmas include two brand new productions: Alice, A Musical Adventure in Wonderland and Down the Rabbit Hole. Our previous 2021 Community Exhibition Takeover was based on our performance of Peter Pan, An Awfully Big Musical Adventure, and focused on turning our building into “Neverland”.

Within this project, we engaged with over 360 members of our local community to create pieces such as the Lost Ones Dens, a Starry Night Sky and a 5- metre-long Crocodile! Throughout this project we worked with groups such as young carers, refugees, asylum seekers, local primary schools, and adults living with dementia. All participants who take part in the project will be involved in a drama workshop delivered by the Mayflower Engage team, which will explore the storyline of Alice in Wonderland ahead of their art workshops.

Artist briefs

  • The White Rabbit

The artist will work with multiple classes at a local school to create an art installation piece that is inspired by the story of Alice in Wonderland. The installation piece will be one large scale (approximately 5ft in height) white rabbit which will be displayed on the mini mezzanine above our foyer. This will be the first exhibition piece that the public will see, and so the piece should also include signage which reads “Welcome to Wonderland”. The final piece must be robust, safe for interaction with the public and flame retardant. The work with the school will involve delivering up to 1 day of workshops in the group setting. The expectation with this area is that the artist will support the children to create pieces of the rabbit, which the artist will then compile and complete outside of the workshops as part of the agreed fee.

Artist Fee: £700 consisting of £250 for one day of workshop delivery, £450 for continuing work outside of sessions.

Materials: £300

  • The Queen’s Rose Garden

The artist will work with a local community group to create the Queen of Heart’s rose garden, consisting of hedge-maze style walls and shrubs to line the sides of our mezzanine space, and pieces to hang from the ceiling above the space. This work will involve delivering up to a days’ worth of workshops in a community setting, where the community group will support with the creation of the garden. Any work needed to finish the art pieces outside of the workshop will be completed by the artist as part of the agreed fee. The final piece must be robust, safe for interaction with the public and flame retardant. As part of this space, the artist will also need to design a simple instruction sheet that explains how to create individual red and white roses, which can be added to the garden. The instruction sheet would be shared more widely with schools and local community groups, encouraging individuals to create roses and send them in to MAST be included in the exhibition. The work on the instruction sheet would need to be completed by August 2022.

Artist Fee: £900 consisting of £250 for one day of workshop delivery, £450 for continuing work outside of sessions, and £200 for instruction design for public call out.

Materials: £300

  • Cafe Display Boards

Working with a local SEND group, the artist will create a photography exhibition which explores themes central to our production, such as young people exploring their sense of identity. This project will involve delivering up to 2 days of workshops in the group setting and then completing any necessary edits to the photos outside of the workshops. The photos should be colourful and playful but can take a more conceptual approach to the Wonderland theme. These boards may remain up once the rest of the Wonderland areas have been taken down. In total there are 7 exhibition boards in our café area, with the size breakdown as follows: 5 x A1 boards and 2 x A0 boards. All of our boards are landscape. Mayflower Engage will create copy for an accompanying information board that will explain the context for the piece and will manage the printing of all of the exhibition boards. In order for us to have the boards printed in time, you will need to supply final digital designs for each board by Friday 4th November.

Artist Fee: £700 consisting of £500 for two days of workshop delivery, £200 for continuing work outside of sessions.

Materials: £100

  • Tea Party

Working with a local community group, the artist will create a tea party installation piece which includes two key areas. The first will be a tea party where people can sit, outside of our Studio 3 area on Level 2. The performance on our level 2 floor will be focused towards under 5’s and their families, and so the tea party installation should include sensory elements which are robust enough to be regularly interacted with by a younger audience. The second aspect of the installation will also include an upside-down tea party display, which will be hung in the skylight outside of Studio 3. Each of the final pieces must be robust, safe for interaction with the public and flame retardant. This work will involve delivering up to a days’ worth of workshops in a community setting, where the community group will support with the creation of the tea party installation. Any work needed to finish the art pieces outside of the workshop will be completed by the artist as part of the agreed fee.

Artist Fee: £700 consisting of £250 for one day of workshop delivery, £450 for continuing work outside of sessions.

Materials: £300

  • “Down the Rabbit Hole” themed corridor

Our performance in Studio 2 this year will be a new piece titled Down the Rabbit Hole. The piece is designed to be a sensory experience for those under 5 and their grown-ups, which explores the world of Wonderland. The artist will work with a local community group to create an installation piece, which will be positioned in the corridor leading towards Studio 2. You will work in consultation with the Set Designer for the production to better understand the design themes of the piece, which is currently in creation. As the installation will be on display in a corridor, the walkway must be maintained, and so the design for the piece should focus on the walls and ceiling of the corridor. The final piece must be robust, safe for interaction with the public and flame retardant. This work will involve delivering up to a days’ worth of workshops in a community setting, where the community group will support with the creation of the installation. Any work needed to finish the art pieces outside of the workshop will be completed by the artist as part of the agreed fee.
