Want to hear something funny? In this role you'll work with Channel 4's head of comedy to ensure the efficient management of the development slate and submissions to the department. 

The multi award winning Comedy Department is one of the key commissioning areas at Channel 4.  Its commissioning brief is diverse and covers all scripted comedy across Channel 4 and E4 including Derry Girls, Stath Let’s Flats, This Way Up, Feel Good, The Windsors, Friday Night Dinner, Catastrophe, Flowers, Chewing Gum, Game Face, Home, Dead Pixels and Maxxx. 

The department is one of the smallest at C4. The team is tight knit, passionate, hard-working, challenging and collaborative. This job would suit a smart, confident, team player, eager to learn and make a role their own at broadcaster with a unique comedy legacy.  

We’re after someone with a genuine passion for scripted comedy, a genuine knowledge of the UK comedy landscape and a hunger to learn, step up and help support the development of some great new shows.  

Works closely with both the genre assistant and the commissioners to track all submissions to the department and ensure timely responses to producers.  

Recommends and tracks key writing, directing and acting talent and when needed, provides editorial support on existing developments and commissions. 


  • Reading and responding to submissions. Working with Commissioning Editors to coordinate reading for the team.
  • To deal directly with matters that need not be an immediate priority for the Commissioning Editors - for example, unsolicited submissions and progress on their behalf.
  • Tracking all projects on the slate and any new developments; ensuring the development slate is regularly updated.
  • Proactively identify new material and talent. Keep up to date with new comedy performers , showcases, theatre production, graduate showcases and books etc.
  • Organising materials and ideas for development initiatives – meetings, brainstorms, away days.
  • Offer development support on projects where required, including attending meetings and writing up notes.



Knowledge, skills, experience

  • Ability to exercise excellent judgement and understanding of what gives a script potential for the channel with a detailed knowledge of the department’s output.
  • Experience of professional script reading and writing detailed script reports.
  • Demonstrable interest in television comedy, especially new talent.
  • Ability to deal with several projects at once, prioritise and work efficiently under pressure.
  • Ability to build and maintain effective working relationships at all levels of seniority, both internally and externally.
  • Ability to prioritise and cope with several tasks at once.
  • To have and use initiative, but also be able to respond to orders and have a willingness to do whatever is required.
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Possess a keen attitude and a willingness to learn.


  • Experience at a Comedy Production company.
  • A digital native outlook - passion and awareness for emerging comedy talent over social networks and a desire to champion that talent internally.
