Location: This role may be based at their London office, or any of Hachette UK’s national offices. These include Manchester, Edinburgh, Newcastle, Sheffield & Bristol. Hachette UK supports agile working and offers a blend of in-office (3 days) and homeworking (2 days) per week.

Hachette UK is excited to announce that its hugely successful traineeship programme will be running again this year, in partnership with literary agency Curtis Brown and booksellers Waterstones!

This opportunity is aimed at individuals who are looking for a career change or wishing to return to work after a career break.

By taking part in this broad and exciting programme, 10 trainees will gain exposure to all elements of the journey of publishing a book, from pitch to production.

About the traineeship

Hachette UK is running a 12-month traineeship programme which will give 10 trainees the opportunity to gain a rich and diverse understanding of the publishing industry. 

They have reviewed and refreshed their existing traineeship programme and added an exciting new element for 2024, which will see the introduction of placements for experienced candidates looking to take a new or different step in their career and bring their current expertise and skills into the publishing industry. Their aim is to welcome 2-3 individuals who are looking for a career change or wishing to return to work after a career break and place them in Mid-level roles.

There will be 1 direct to consumer placement as follows:

  • 1 x mid-level 12-month direct to consumer placement

This will be Hachette UK’s sixth intake of trainees and the programme continues to focus on making publishing more accessible to under-represented groups, as part of the publisher’s ‘Changing the Story’ vision for diversity and inclusion.

It is actively seeking applications from candidates from Black, Asian and ethincally diverse backgrounds, applicants from lower socio-economic backgrounds, and particularly men from both of these backgrounds, to help improve representation of these groups across Hachette UK.

 

What you will experience

  • The trainee will spend the entire year within one of the publishing divisions.
  • They will specialise in supporting with group-run Shopify store(s), products and other Shopify stores run in-division.
  • All the trainees will spend a month at Waterstones to learn the art of bookselling and understand consumer buying behaviour.
  • All the trainees will participate in a bespoke learning and development programme, with the opportunity to learn about the journey of publishing a book, from pitch to production.
