This role fills a key need in our busy general Crime & Thriller team, home to some of the biggest crime & thriller brands in the business.

We are looking for someone to cover our Commissioning Editor’s maternity leave – taking full ownership of the authors at every stage of the editorial process, and supporting the Publisher, Julia Wisdom and the Managing Director, Kate Elton, on many of the imprint’s most successful authors.

We are a high-volume, ambitious team focused on delivering bestselling crime & thriller fiction with page-turning appeal and developing our authors’ long-term careers, as well as delivering digital success for our titles. The successful candidate will help us to deliver the strongest books possible, working with our authors, supporting them and making sure our publishing is focused, strategic and efficient.

  • Structural and detailed line-editing work on major titles: structural edits, developmental edits, redrafts and line-edits; working with authors directly to implement the editorial work and manage a title through various drafts
  • Full desk-editing responsibilities – seeing titles through the whole Production process from copyedited manuscript to finished copies for a range of crime & thriller titles, including digital formats, and managing freelance copy-editors and proof-readers, ensuring plant costs are in line with budget for each project
  • Liaising with authors over the progress of the book through production, copy approval and day-to-day editorial matters
  • Writing jacket copy (hb and pb) and selling copy for external sites, brainstorming titles and shoutlines, drafting jacket briefs and delivering covers to critical path
  • Working with Marketing, Sales & Publicity teams as needed to ensure successful publication
  • Managing editorial information and metadata about the titles (AIS, Plan G Acquisitions, Metadata, P&Ls) to ensure accurate and up-to-date title/list information is available internally and externally
  • Working with the Crime & Thriller team to deliver team objectives on diversity and inclusion, author care, critical path and reaching readers
  • Reading manuscript submissions for the Publisher and Editorial Director, and reporting on these, noting market context

Knowledge, skills, experience

  • Demonstrable experience editing fiction, ideally with some experience in the crime & thriller field
  • Substantial experience working on large structural edits directly with authors
  • Considerable desk-editing and project management experience
  • Direct relevant experience with author care and agent relationships throughout the publishing cycle
  • Experience working in an editorial team within a major publishing house or within a major group
  • Strong structural and line-editing skills
  • A clear vision for how to successfully publish books from initial idea to beyond publication
  • Being a key, energetic and positive member of a busy, creative editorial team; flair and passion for books; calm under pressure
  • Strong interpersonal skills and confidence managing numerous relationships involved in each title
  • Strong organisational skills and self-motivated
