Part of the Reach plc group, which is the largest commercial national and regional news publisher in the UK, the Mirror has always sought to entertain their readers as well as inform them. Renowned for its news, showbusiness and television coverage, as well as sports reporting, particularly in football, of Premier and lower league clubs which regularly shapes the sports news agenda. The Mirror has a long tradition of fighting for social justice and is proud of its role as the voice of ordinary, compassionate and caring Brits.  Its role is to inform and entertain but also to be a voice for those who otherwise go unheard in the national conversation.

The team at The Mirror are offering two brilliant opportunities for sharp and enthusiastic editorial assistants to join their News & Features team for six months. The successful candidates will be given the opportunity to research and report on stories both in print and online, stay up to date on the latest ground-breaking articles and support the team with preparation for the Pride of Britain Awards.

Their ideal candidate will be a go-getting individual who is always flicking through updates of the latest news, sport and celebrity gossip. You will have strong writing skills and a passion for delivering stories that matter to their readers. What you will learn

  • How to research and write stories and articles that are accurate, compliant and engaging
  • How to write copy for the newspaper and digital platforms
  • How to pitch story ideas

 

Knowledge, skills, experience

  • A love of journalism and a passion for storytelling
  • Strong writing skills
  • A strong interest in news and current affairs with an understanding of the tone of this tabloid newspaper
  • The ability to generate, research and develop original stories
  • The ability to work to deadlines and remain focused under pressure
  • Excellent communication skills
  • The ability to work well in a team environment
  • The ability to be self-motivated and quick thinking with strong and decisive decision-making skills

Desirable

  • Some journalism training would be a big advantage
  • Work experience on a newspaper or digital news site would be beneficial (this could include a student or local newspaper)
