Beano is one of the nation’s most loved and iconic brands. From first hitting the newsstand in 1938 it is an ever-evolving kids’ media brand with an award-winning digital network, a growing comic, a thriving IP business and an exciting new TV and film development studio. 

Part of DC Thomson, there’s a lot going on, a lot to do and a lot to be proud of, especially as Beano is turning 85 next year. This is a pivotal role in which you will be helping to drive the brand forward into new and exciting areas both here in the UK and globally

Reporting directly to brand marketing and communications director, the head of brand marketing and communications manager will be responsible for developing the full marketing strategy that is aligned with the overall creative and commercial vision for Beano and DC Thomson brands and the team that delivers it.

Leading a small team that is responsible for marketing, communications, partnerships, events and supporting a growing IP business, the head of brand marketing and communications will embody and represent the Beano values of ruffling feathers, sticking together and mucking about and is entrepreneurial, commercially minded and capable of developing campaigns and steering partnerships which build the brand.

 

Responsibilities

  • Develop and manage consumer marketing annual plans which drive brand health and deliver brand reach for all business functions to help drive revenue
  • Assist in the development of annual marketing budgets and responsible for delivering annual marketing plans to forecast
  • Initiate and implement over-arching marketing and PR strategy, identifying key stories, product highlights, and consumer moments
  • Drive marketing and PR calendar, ensuring that all activity is communicated to internal and external teams
  • Oversee forward planning and implementation of all communications and brand materials for the business
  • Work with in-house teams and external agencies to create best-in-class marketing communications across all external customer touchpoints and brand-owned platforms
  • Pull together and lead cross-functional working teams to drive integral projects such as campaigns, partnerships, product launches, and promotional events
  • Lead contact and senior management of all agencies and department suppliers
  • Drafting and facilitating approval of all customer service responses
  • Recruit and manage VIP and celebrity fan relationships
  • Manage and execute any crisis comms
  • Act as brand guardian, overseeing tone of voice, consistency, and quality of all visual and written content
  • Key contact for DCT Comms team to support on wider internal comms and The Hub and social support
  • Direct report responsibility for brand marketing and communications manager and management for full brand marketing and communications team

 

Knowledge, skills, experience

  • Demonstrable marketing and communications experience including 360 campaign management and dealing with media
  • Experience of line management and career development of direct reports
  • Experience of working with creative services and agencies
  • Previous experience and responsibility for annual marketing plans and budgets
