The Arts Marketing Association (AMA) works with individuals and organisations in the arts, culture and heritage sector. We provide training, networking and support. This helps to build better relationships with audiences, build organisations better able to do that work, and build the skills in our sector. We champion marketing in its broadest sense.   

We are a not-for-profit organisation. We have 3000 members across more than 600 organisations across the UK. We have members at all career levels, and organisations who join span a wide spectrum of arts and heritage types. This includes theatres, arts centres, music venues, orchestras, galleries, heritage sites, museums, libraries and more.   

We are looking for a Head of Membership. You will lead our membership team to provide an essential service to the arts sector and achieve our growth goals. We are looking for someone to bring their experience and ideas to our friendly and ambitious team.  You will work closely with the Head of Marketing, who we are also currently recruiting for. 

 

Responsibilities

Membership Strategy

  • Develop and implement AMA membership strategy to achieve growth targets and our Membership sales income target
  • You will be jointly responsible for AMA income targets with the Head of Marketing – primarily for this role this will be via Membership sales.

Development

  • Lead on developing our Membership offer to ensure it is seen as essential by current and potential members. This will involve undertaking research with current and potential members to inform service development.

Sales

  • Achieve new member targets by developing a strategy and working with the team to deliver campaigns aimed at target groups. You will work with the Head of Marketing who will be responsible for raising the profile of the AMA which will have a positive impact on engaging new members.

Engagement and Renewals

  • Develop our engagement activities to enable every member to receive maximum benefit from their AMA membership. This activity will protect and develop member retention, enable AMA to deliver impact for members, and support the events income generated from members.

Member Communications

  • Maintain overview of all member communications; member onboarding, renewal and engagement. Ensure that member communications are compliant (particularly in relation to GDPR) and that quality assurance processes are in place for content creation.

Research, Impact and Advocacy

  • Lead on key pieces of market research for the AMA including, but not limited to, bi-annual member research; producing feasibility studies to explore areas for new membership growth; implementing membership audits; identifying and communicating the impact of AMA Membership. To report on the findings to the CEO, team and Board.
  • Plan and deliver activities that advocate for AMA members, marketing and training across the sector. For example, in the past 12 months we have released guidance on marketing salaries.

Knowledge, skills, experience

  • You will have managed a professional membership scheme in a previous role achieving growth and high levels of member satisfaction
  • You will have written effective membership strategies and worked with a team to deliver these
  • You will have experience of line managing a team
  • You will be able to demonstrate projects and initiatives that you have worked on which clearly demonstrate your ability to think strategically and plan effectively
  • You will have planned and managed department budgets
  • You will have undertaken training in growing and leading a successful membership scheme
  • You will be up to date with latest membership ideas and best practice. You will have an interest in and awareness of best practice within both the arts and commercial sectors
  • You will have skills in market research, evaluation, communications, and sales
  • You will be able to use multiple systems – for example, a CRM system, analytics and email systems
