Scenic metalwork apprentice
We are recruiting for a scenic metalwork apprentice to join our workshops department. This is an exciting opportunity to gain hands on experience at a world-class theatre and a Level 2 Welding apprenticeship.
Under the direction of National Theatre (NT) Staff, you will manufacture and repair metal scenery for the NT’s productions and other metal items in the metal fabrication workshop. You will also work on stage fitting up and modifying sets as required for technical rehearsals and repairing damaged sets.
Throughout the 24-month apprenticeship you will learn about materials used in metal fabrication including various types and shapes/sizes of metal, different fabrication techniques and related materials. You will be using hand and power tools, and metal working machinery while learning about basic stage craft and the installation of scenery on stage.
The apprenticeship will be split between the National Theatre and the College of North West London at the Willesden Campus. You will spend 1 day a week at the College of North West London. Your remaining time will be spent at the National Theatre workshops learning the craft, key skills and working within the team on projects and productions.
Knowledge, skills, experience
- Have a mature and sensible attitude
- Show that you have a desire to be creative
- An enthusiasm to learn, and a willingness to take instruction from staff at the NT and at college
- Be able to follow strict health & safety rules and theatre working practices and to understand why it is important to do so
- The ability to work well within a team and communicate clearly
This is a Level 2 apprenticeship, therefore applicants must be suitable for study at that level and NOT hold a degree, HND, or a post graduate qualification, or have experience of working in professional theatre.
