The Subscriber Engagement & Newsletters team is responsible for discovering innovative ways to encourage existing subscribers to gain more from their subscription. As a member of this team you will collaborate with our internal Software Engineers to work on features aimed at the Economist’s subscriber base of over 1 million people.

With exciting projects around every corner, you’ll create APIs (Application Programming Interface) that are called on every page load across and mobile apps which reach the majority of new subscribers as soon as they begin their journey, aiming to show them what benefits they now have access to. You will work on cross-team services for bookmarking articles, a notifications system to alert subscribers to new features & offers, and a rebuild of our newsletters hub website.   • Report to the Engineering Manager of the Subscriber Engagement & Newsletters team
  • Take responsibility for all stages in the software development life-cycle
  • Work within a Next.js and React app, building custom APIs (Application Programming Interface), deploying into AWS
  • Work with our designers and product owners to create a seamless user experience.
  • Design, write and deliver software to deliver in a strategic direction
  • Identify complexity in projects, services, processes and proactively work with the team to prioritise resolutions
  • Apply team-based standards for programming tools and techniques and advise on their application
  • Work within, and encourage a Devops culture and Continuous Delivery process
  • Work in a team that's essential to growing and retaining our subscriber base
  • Advocate for building solutions which can work cross-platform, in collaboration with other teams/platforms
  • Work with colleagues to produce high-quality solutions
  • Create pragmatic, scalable and clean code that’s easy to understand


Knowledge, skills, experience

  • Experience working with JavaScript and/or Typescript
  • Background working within agile cross-functional product teams
  • Exposure to web software development (using HTML, CSS, JavaScript)
  • Proven track record developing on public cloud infrastructure, specifically AWS
  • Capable of technical deep-dives into code and architecture
  • Familiar with algorithms, data structures, complexity analysis and software design
  • Ability to solve problems and analyse global scale distributed systems
  • Good communication and mentorship skills
  • Ability to adapt quickly and integrate with experienced software engineers
  • Desire to bring new approaches and ideas to the table
