World Book Day is a small charity working to make sure that more children, from all backgrounds, develop the life-long habit of reading for pleasure. In this opportunity, the organisation will be welcoming a creative, innovative and dedicated trainee marketing and design assistant to its small team. You’ll have the opportunity to develop your skills and experience in visual design, marketing and communications.

As this is a trainee role, you’ll be supported to develop your skills and knowledge as part of the team delivering World Book Day’s annual campaign and year-round activities. You will work closely with the manager for World Book Day and the digital and content marketing executive. You’ll contribute to improving levels of reading and book ownership – particularly amongst disadvantaged children – across the UK and Ireland.

What you will learn

  • Develop your design skills to create visual assets (presentations, social media assets, email campaigns, printed materials, documents and resources)
  • Develop your writing, designing and email communications for different audiences
  • Designing comms and marketing materials for partners; publishers, libraries, literacy charities, booksellers, schools and early years settings
  • Develop your reporting and analysis skills; recording and analysing statistics from the World Book Day website, email comms and social media channels.

 

Key activities

  • Developing your design skills to create visual assets (presentations, social media assets, email campaigns, printed materials, documents and resources) that embody the World Book Day brand and strengthen its visual identity
  • Contributing to the protection of the World Book Day brand; working with our commercial and charity partners to ensure assets and promotional activity adheres to the charity’s Trademark and brand guidelines
  • Assisting with the World Book Day website; designing, planning, writing and scheduling assets and content, working with the website content management system (CMS)
  • Writing, designing and scheduling social media posts for World Book Day’s channels and monitoring and engaging with audiences and partners
  • Writing and designing email communications for different audiences
  • Designing comms and marketing materials for partners; publishers, libraries, literacy charities, booksellers, schools and early years settings
  • Developing your creative ideas, keeping informed about digital marketing trends and innovative ways to design and deliver digital content
  • Supporting World Book Day’s reporting to partners (collecting stats, screenshots, info throughout the campaign)
  • Developing your reporting and analysis skills; recording and analysing statistics from the World Book Day website, email comms and social media channels
  • Raising POs for promotional materials and design costs
  • Meeting attendance as required, recording the minutes and reporting on general and specific activities.

 

What we're looking for

You will receive full training in World Book Day's systems and be supported to develop skills in the areas in the job description, but please refer to your experience and suitability for the role based on the following:

  • You may have a qualification in art, graphic design or marketing, and/or a portfolio of your marketing and design projects
  • You will have the capacity and ambition to develop your expertise in design packages: Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign and Canva and experience of Microsoft package (Outlook, Word, Excel & PowerPoint)
  • Experience is not essential but could be in one or more of the following areas: design marketing, digital or social media marketing/promotion, online content provision; publishing/bookselling
  • You will have a good eye for design and attention to detail
  • Ability to demonstrate a commitment to World Book Day’s values: integrity, innovation, collaboration, respect, fun and celebration, all children reading for pleasure
  • Confident written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills
  • The ability to organise and prioritise tasks and deadlines
  • A self-starter with a strong work ethic, able to work effectively from home.
