We are recruiting for a scenic metalwork apprentice to join our workshops department. This is an exciting opportunity to gain hands on experience at a world-class theatre and a Level 2 Welding apprenticeship.
Under the direction of National Theatre (NT) Staff, you will manufacture and repair metal scenery for the NT’s productions and other metal items in the metal fabrication workshop. You will also work on stage fitting up and modifying sets as required for technical rehearsals and repairing damaged sets.  
Throughout the 24-month apprenticeship you will learn about materials used in metal fabrication including various types and shapes/sizes of metal, different fabrication techniques and related materials. You will be using hand and power tools, and metal working machinery while learning about basic stage craft and the installation of scenery on stage. 
The apprenticeship will be split between the National Theatre and the College of North West London at the Willesden Campus. You will spend 1 day a week at the College of North West London. Your remaining time will be spent at the National Theatre workshops learning the craft, key skills and working within the team on projects and productions.

<li>Have a mature and sensible attitude</li>
<li>Show that you have a desire to be creative</li>
<li>An enthusiasm to learn, and a willingness to take instruction from staff at the NT and at college</li>
<li>Be able to follow strict health &amp; safety rules and theatre working practices and to understand why it is important to do so</li>
<li>The ability to work well within a team and communicate clearly</li>
</ul>

This is a Level 2 apprenticeship, therefore applicants must be suitable for study at that level and NOT hold a degree, HND, or a post graduate qualification, or have experience of working in professional theatre.

Responsibilities

<li>As our Head of Visual Arts, you will oversee the artistic strategy and overall programme for both strands</li>
<li>This is a hands-on programming and curatorial role as well as strategic one, where you will nurture the development of individual projects</li>
<li>Working with the Artistic Director, the wider Barbican Centre and international stakeholders, you will develop ambitious, inclusive and sustainable exhibitions and events at the Barbican and a flourishing international partnership and touring programme</li>
<li>A leading member of Barbican’s senior management team, your work will be informed by Barbican’s commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion</li>
<li>We’ll look to you to build new audiences, develop income generation and raise funds</li>
<li>You will also help to deliver our new Creative Vision, which holds our civic purpose at its heart and aligns the social, creative and commercial aspects of our work with our ambition to become a 21st century international Centre</li>

Knowledge, skills, experience
<ul>
<li>You’ll have an impressive track-record of developing innovative visual arts programmes, as well as bringing together individual exhibitions</li>
<li>Having worked for at least one major contemporary visual arts organisation, you will have built strong networks across the international art world, including artists, museums and galleries and collectors</li>
<li>You’ll be capable of managing complex budgets and balancing artistic requirements with commercial needs</li>
<li>With particular strengths in collaboration, negotiation and communication, you’re equally at home interacting with artists, presenting to sponsors, or making media appearances</li>
<li>You’ll also have the leadership skills to get the best from your team, consisting of a senior manager, six curators and a personal assistant</li>

Stanley Picker Gallery at Kingston University is one of the leading university galleries and commissioning venues in the UK, working with artists, designers, students, academics and members of the local community to encourage creativity, learning, research and innovation.
Each fellowship provides up to £16,000 and valuable access to the extensive material workshops, technical resources and expertise within Kingston School of Art and the wider University departments, to support a practice-based, innovative research project that will result in an exhibition of international standing at the Stanley Picker Gallery.
