Create an accessible social media strategy to launch a new environmental charity and promote its first grant funding open calls.

Afield is a new environmental charity looking to launch our social media channels and our first open call for proposals for grant funding. We are looking for an experienced social media consultant to support us through this period — to make a social media plan, build an online presence, and think carefully about how we reach our key audiences.

Over the coming months Afield will launch its social media channels and prepare to open our first ever open call for proposals for grant funding. We are looking for an experienced social media consultant to help support us through this period — to make a social media plan, launch our social media, build an online presence, and think carefully about how we reach our key audiences: global majority individuals and communities for arts and green spaces; and disabled, chronically ill and LGBTQ+ artists for arts. We are particularly keen to hear from consultants with global majority lived experience and expertise in reaching global majority audiences.

What you'll be doing

We anticipate up to 30 days of consultancy in total, with about three days onboarding and familiarisation at the start, followed by approximately one day a week until end Feb 2027, spread flexibly. The work covers the following connected strands:

Develop a 6-9 month social media plan

  • Create an accessible social media content and engagement plan to launch both Afield as an organisation and our first open calls in October and December. Recommend priority audiences, messages and platforms platforms based on our goals
  • Set-up channels, including bios, branding and tone of voice guidance
  • Develop templates based on our assets and digital collateral.
  • Work with Founders and Grants and Cohort Manager to test approaches including messaging and tone of voice.
  • Research and identify like-minded organisations who might support the promotion of our Open Calls.

Build a social media presence ahead of the launch of our first open call for grant funding

  • Establish a presence for Afield as a new grant-making environmental justice charity focusing on urban nature spaces and arts research.
  • Establish Afield as a funding organisation prioritising structurally disadvantaged communities especially global majority individuals and communities; and disabled and LGBTQ+ artists.
  • In particular, for Nature Activator Grants recommend channels, tone, formats and relationships suited to reaching communities in our target boroughs, with an emphasis on global majority communities.
  • Establish Afield as an organisation that looks and feels to our key audiences that they trust, like and want to apply to.
  • Encourage people to sign up to our website.
  • Introduce Afield’s work digitally and/or in person to like-minded organisations who work with our key audiences and could help promote our Open Calls.
  • Ensure all social media content is accessible and inclusive (eg plain English, captions, alt text).

Launch our Open Calls on Social Media

  • Create and publish timely social media content that attracts strong, diverse applications from all of our key audiences.
  • Build understanding of eligibility and application process
  • Use relevant metrics to monitor engagement and recommend and make necessary adjustments or changes to improve reach and impact
  • Help publicise our online Q&A sessions for both Open Calls
  • Reminder and countdown posts

Build relationships with relevant organisations to support our Open Calls

  • Research and identify relevant online community networks, media, and influencers/voices we should approach/consider working with
  • Work with other organisations where relevant to further publicise and support open calls.

Who we're looking for

  • A track record of launching or growing social media channels for a charity, nonprofit or purpose-led organisation
  • Experience developing content and engagement strategies for underrepresented or global majority audiences, ideally in a London context
  • Proven written and visual communication skills for a values-led organisation, and sound judgement on tone for a small, values-led charity
  • An understanding of the UK grants/funding sector is a plus but not essential

Equality, diversity and inclusion

Afield is committed to equity and inclusion in how we work, including how we commission freelance support. We are particularly keen to receive applications from global majority candidates, and we welcome applications from freelancers who bring lived experience of the communities we are seeking to reach. We are happy to discuss any access requirements or adjustments needed during the application or delivery process.

We welcome and encourage applications from candidates who are under-represented in the creative industries.

Please make sure that you state in your application that you found this role via Creative Access.
