About us

140 Films is an independent film production company working across documentary and fiction, and was founded in 2019 by Alistair Payne-James.

Prior to founding 140 Films, Alistair co-produced Kingdom of Us directed by Lucy Cohen which is on Netflix (Best Documentary - BFI LFF 2017, Best Single Documentary - Grierson Awards 2018 and nominated for Outstanding Debut for Director - BAFTAs 2018). He has produced several shorts films including three with director Matt Houghton - Landline (Best Documentary Short - Grierson Awards 2018 and HBO Documentary Short Film Award - Provincetown 2018), Hands Up, Chin Down (Sheffield Doc/Fest 2018) and Dear Araucaria (Audience Award - Sheffield Doc/Fest 2015). While at Pulse Films he line produced across various projects in different stages of production including the edit and post on American Honey directed by Andrea Arnold (Cannes Jury Prize 2016) and Arcade Fire: The Reflektor Tapes directed by Kahlil Joseph (TIFF 2015).

Alistair has worked in short form content for ten years and produced commercials for brands including Nike, Sainsbury’s, Adidas, Cancer Research UK, BBC, Boots, Google, Volkswagen, TFL, 4Creative, Instagram and WaterWipes amongst others. Agencies he has worked with include Droga5, Adam and Eve DDB, Uncommon, BBH and AMV BBDO. Shoot locations include Ukraine, Ireland, Portugal, France, Spain, Hungary and Argentina. 

In addition to film work, Alistair does youth work with the charity Hackney Quest as well as mentoring with ScreenSkills and Creative Mentor Network. He enjoys connecting to young people with an interest in the industry so please feel free to get in touch.

Alistair was named a Film London Lodestar and selected for BFI Network/BAFTA Crew for 2021.
