From workshops and talks to tours and events, create dynamic engagement programmes that help audiences dive deeper into the National Theatre and discover its rich archive.
This newly created role, sitting within the National Theatre Archive team, will lead on the planning, administration and delivery of archive-related events, activations, tours and other activity at the National Theatre’s iconic Southbank site, National Theatre Studio and offsite as we seek to build a more cohesive public engagement strategy.
The archive engagement coordinator will be responsible for developing and delivering public engagement programmes, outreach, and activations that promote The National Theatre’s remarkable archive and its role in understanding the National Theatre (NT) today, and in the future. This role involves working closely with the archive team and wider customer experience and commercial operations directorate, to create engaging and informative public engagement experiences that highlight the National Theatre’s historical and cultural significance and utilise the archive collections in our care. The post-holder will also assist the digital archives manager (co-acting archive manager) with additional duties as required to support the wider activity of the National Theatre Archive.
Responsibilities
- Develop and deliver engaging public programmes (workshops, talks, tours and events) to promote the National Theatre's history, in line with the NT Archive Public Engagement Strategy
- Provide excellent customer service to all audiences and visitors to the National Theatre
- Oversee archive-related events, working with front of house colleagues to ensure smooth planning, promotion and delivery and support event management and logistics to bring the NT Archive to life for audiences
- Research and create compelling content to interpret the history of the National Theatre and its place in the broader theatre ecosystem, including developing storytelling for digital platforms, printed materials and live presentations
- Contribute to activities that support income generation and fundraising
- Work with the archive and front of house colleagues to keep accurate records of project activities. Regularly assess the impact of archive engagement activities and evaluate success against agreed metrics by developing and maintaining a framework, providing feedback and recommendations for the future
- Be conscious of, and work within, agreed budgets and cost planning frameworks for the delivery of the Archive Public Engagement Strategy, escalating as and when required
- Support the business-as-usual activities of the archive, including regular
- supervision of the research room and retrieval/reshelving of archive material; responding to routine remote enquiries and other public-facing duties
- Carry out any other tasks required on an ad hoc or continuing basis, commensurate with the general level of responsibility of the post
- Contribute to an open, collaborative and creative working culture and work in line with NT values

Knowledge, skills & experience
- Experience in creating and delivering public programming activity in a heritage, museum, gallery or commercial setting with a high degree of confidence in public speaking and interacting with audiences
- Demonstrable understanding of how public engagement activities support the artistic and commercial goals of the National Theatre
- Excellent research skills with a keen interest in the history of the National Theatre, the Southbank and the wider UK arts sector
- Excellent verbal and written skills, with a high level of accuracy in English
- Experience in planning and delivering events, with a clear understanding of the role of logistics, timekeeping and resourcing in such activity
- Experience of delivering digital content to audiences via online platforms, including social media
