Join 59 as an Assistant Designer to collaborate on ambitious, interdisciplinary spatial and architectural design projects.

59 is a multi award-winning studio based in London and New York. We conceive, design and deliver ambitious, large-scale story-driven artwork, stage shows and immersive experiences for live audiences, grounded by a deeply interdisciplinary process involving architecture, animation, video, light, sound, music and technical design. 

We work in partnership with some of the world’s most prestigious and ambitious clients, and with best-in-class partners globally across industries to build and deliver our projects. Current commissions  include artworks, placemaking installations, temporary and permanent buildings, stage shows, ceremonies and events. 

59 is embarking on a new and exciting phase of growth, which includes introducing new roles and building on existing roles. 

We are looking for new Assistant Designers with a spatial design and/or architecture background to join 59’s team. The role will work in our multidisciplinary Design Department to research, develop, refine and design responses to a broad slate of creative challenges across the company’s project portfolio.

 

Responsibilities

Project Teams

  • Attending project meetings and workshops
  • Engaging in internal design discussions
  • Supporting the delivery of internal and client-facing design presentations
  • Demonstrating an understanding and an overview of the project as a whole
  • Working in collaboration with all other members of the company Creative
  • Undertaking and compiling visual and conceptual work (both textual and visual), design research and gathering references
  • Using analogue, digital design techniques to interpret design ideas into sketches and visualisations
  • Communicating design ideas internally and externally
  • Developing design ideas in response to feedback
  • Preparation of presentation documents (InDesign, keynote, powerpoint, google slides)
  • Work through all design phases illustrating design as required for each stage (i.e. from concept sketches to detail drawings)
  • Archiving projects Other
  • Contributing to 59's work around Sustainability, Belonging & Inclusion and Universal Design
  • Any other tasks reasonably requested

 

Knowledge, skills and experience

Essential

  • Demonstrable experience, education or training in spatial design, set design, product design  and/or architecture
  • An ability to communicate design ideas using analogue and digital drawing techniques 
  • A strong interest in interdisciplinary design and collaborating with other specialisms 
  • Comfortable working to deadlines and under pressure
  • An experienced collaborator and a strong communicator
  • Demonstrable 2D drafting (Vectorworks or AutoCAD)
  • Excellent 3D digital modelling skills  (in particular in Rhino)
  • Good Experience with Adobe software – especially InDesign, photoshop and illustrator
  • Experience with model making including hand made, laser cutting and 3d printing
  • Passionate about live performance and public arts projects

Desirable

  • Computational design skills (especially Grasshopper) 
  • Experience with using AI as part of a design process 
  • Knowledge / understanding about other creative disciplines – particularly video design, animation, lighting, sound and programming
