Thames & Hudson publishes beautiful books that open doors onto all aspects of culture.

We are seeking a skilled Artworker to join our Design team, supporting the production of our award-winning illustrated books.

This is a technical rather than a creative role. You'll work closely with our Design Managers, implementing corrections and updates to page layouts with precision and efficiency. A strong command of InDesign is essential, along with a systematic approach to file setup and a meticulous eye for detail.

Knowledge, skills & experience

Essential:

  • Strong proficiency in Adobe InDesign, with ability to create and maintain exceptionally clean, well-structured files
  • Excellent understanding of paragraph styles, character styles, object styles, and parent pages, and how to implement them systematically
  • Experience with Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator
  • Understanding of typographic hierarchy, spacing, and alignment
  • Familiarity with, or willingness to develop, advanced InDesign features including GREP and scripting
  • Strong organisational skills, with ability to manage multiple requests and deadlines simultaneously
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Good written and verbal communication skills, with ability to interpret and apply detailed feedback accurately

Desirable:

  • Good understanding of print production processes, including colour management and file pre-flighting
  • Experience working on illustrated books or complex publications
  • Understanding of how to structure files for translation and co-edition adaptation
  • Willingness to learn how artificial intelligence can support artworking tasks, and to adopt new tools and approaches as they become integrated into design workflows.

Personal Attributes:

  • Highly focused and reliable, maintaining standards under pressure
  • Comfortable following design direction accurately without making independent creative decisions
  • Curious and eager to develop technical expertise in InDesign
  • Self-motivated and proactive in solving technical challenges
  • Collaborative team player who communicates clearly with colleagues
