Hours: 35 per week exclusive of meal breaks, Additional hours at evenings and weekends may be required for which time in lieu may be granted. There are no extra payments for additional hours worked.

 

Are you captivated by theatre, intrigued by Shakespeare, and experienced in casting?

Shakespeare’s Globe is looking for an experienced and enthusiastic individual to join the Theatre & Performance team as Casting Associate. The Casting Associate supports the Head of Casting in the casting of all productions for the Globe theatre, the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse and on tour, as well as casting for R&D workshops, special events and one-off projects, in line with our casting principles.

The role will also work closely with the Producing team, freelance Directors and Casting Directors, and will be part of the Theatre team.

The successful candidate will have proven experience of casting, ideally in theatre. They will have a hands-on approach, with meticulous attention to detail and will ensure the Casting team are supported with an excellent understanding of the management and maintenance of accurate administrative systems and processes. Good knowledge of, and enthusiasm for, Shakespeare’s works are important in this varied and challenging role. 

 

Responsibilities

  • Support and collaborate with the Head of Casting on the casting of all shows R&Ds and other projects. 
  • Deputise for the Head of Casting in the event of absence.
  • Make yourself familiar with the plays being cast.
  • Play an important role in supporting directors and being a resource to them.
  • Lead on the casting of cover actors and supernumeraries in line with the Cover Principles.
  • Be responsible for casting full productions, workshops, events, and R&Ds where required, subject to experience and capacity.
  • Lead on the casting of children in line with guidelines relating to Children in Entertainment and Safeguarding Policy and Procedure and to liaise with the Senior Producers regarding licensing arrangements.
  • Run, be present in and read in on auditions when required.
  • Carry out administrative duties for the department including but not limited to: checking the availabilities of actors; scheduling auditions and overseeing audition days; booking in and setting up audition spaces and co-ordinating diaries and meetings; keeping departmental databases updated.
  • Oversee and support the child licencing process, in collaboration with General & Company Management, including appointment of chaperones, scheduling, liaising with parents, schools and licencing authorities.
  • Maintain a diary of key Drama School productions and showcases, attend and give feedback as required.
  • Keep the Theatre Department and other internal departments informed of casting updates clearly and efficiently by producing and updating cast lists, contact sheets, photo sheets and actors’ details for each production.
  • Be a point of contact for the high volume of submissions from agents and actors, and to be responsible for the efficient streamlining of such enquiries.
  • Cultivate and maintain good working relationships with actors, actors’ agents, directors, drama schools.
  • Attend Globe productions (First Preview, Press Night, Final Night).
  • Regularly attend theatre productions. drama school showcases and understudy runs and to cover as much TV/film as possible; to continuously increase exposure to and continue to develop knowledge of actors, creatives, and the wider industry best practice.
  • Participate in the collection and collation of statistics surrounding the casting process.
  • Undertake any other duties which may be reasonably required.

 

Knowledge, skills and experience

  • Proven experience of working in casting, ideally in theatre.
  • Demonstrable knowledge of actors currently working in theatre, television and film and the wider theatre ecology.
  • Demonstrable passion for and knowledge of Shakespeare, text and performance.
  • Ability to work accurately with meticulous attention to detail.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • A professional, friendly and confident manner at all times, in verbal and written communication.
  • Ability to handle delicate situations with emotional resilience, tact and sensitivity.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and complete discretion.
  • Commitment to flexible working hours.
  • Ability to work on own initiative, effectively under pressure and prioritise effectively.
  • Excellent administrative and organisational skills with a strong attention to detail and a solid understanding of Office 365, particularly Excel, Outlook and Word.
  • Effective team player.

  • A passion for new writing and interest in seeing new plays.
