Are you someone who has a desire to pursue a career as a set and costume designer and is of a background underrepresented at the Donmar and in the wider theatre industry? 

We define this as artists who experience barriers to work and training due to ethnicity, gender and/ or low socio-economic background and due to being D/deaf, disabled and/ or neurodiverse. The Assistant Sound Designer will assist the Production and Sound Designer to realise the sound design for our production of the SKELETON CREW. The role is an opportunity to contribute to, and gain insight into, a professional production process and develop your skills and artistic voice.

CATALYST seeks to address barriers in the theatre industry which prevent people of the global majority, trans and non-binary people and people who are D/deaf, disabled and neurodiverse and from low socio-economic backgrounds from becoming part of the Donmar’s workforce.

 

Responsibilities

  • Attending rehearsals and production meetings
  • Attending meetings with the creative team
  • Attending site visits with the Sound Designer
  • Attending meetings at the Sound Designer’s or other studio or recording locations
  • Assisting the Sound Designer and Production with speaker and patch plans
  • Being present at technical rehearsals and previews to assist as necessary

 

Knowledge, skills and experience

Essential

  • Experience of creating your own work for small-scale fringe productions and/or events
  • If you have attended university or a drama school, experience of creating your own work outside of your course
  • An understanding of your creative process and artistic voice
  • At least one element of your identity or an intersection of identities that are underrepresented at the Donmar and in the wider theatre industry 

Desirable

  • Experience of working with professional creative teams
  • Experience of working with professional technical and stage management teams

 

Professional development

  • Mentoring support from an allocated member of the Donmar staff team, outside of the creative process 
  • Access to Donmar staff and the opportunity to understand how a producing theatre operates
  • A post contract mentoring session with a leading theatre maker
  • Access to a network of emerging creatives and directors
  • The opportunity to watch other Donmar productions for up to 12 months beyond the end of the contract
  • The opportunity to watch other Donmar productions for up to 12 months beyond the end of the contract
