Passionate about justice, language and digital storytelling? Join CRIN as a Communications Officer and help tell powerful, thoughtful stories about children’s rights worldwide.

We are a creative human rights organisation with a focus on children and young people. We believe children deserve to have their rights fully recognised and respected, just as all humans do. We want to ask hard questions about how we live, what needs to change and how we can contribute to a planet where all the intersections of our identities can thrive. We press for rights – not charity – and campaign for a genuine shift in how governments and societies view and treat children. Through research, policy, art and creative storytelling, we encourage people to think critically about the world. Guided by our CRIN Code, we are committed to building a team that represents a wide range of experiences, locations, backgrounds, heritage and perspectives. We understand that the world and its problems cannot be looked at in isolation, that everything is connected, and achieving change calls for many different voices. If this resonates with you – we would really love to hear from you.

About you

You understand the power of language in all its forms: written, spoken, unspoken and visual. You’re passionate about justice, equality and global issues facing our planet. Under the guise of your day job, you may even secretly be an artist. Crucially, you practise the disappearing art of listening.

You believe that storytelling has a crucial role to play in sharing ideas, changing opinions and building a collective vision for a better world. You have a strong understanding of how narratives are constructed, and you care about who can speak and who is too often silenced.

You’re aware that the world won’t change one post at a time, but you nonetheless know how to get the message across to the right people, and have a complete and nuanced understanding of digital audiences. You know how to build relationships online – sharing to connect, not just to make noise.

The role

We see communications as storytelling, because stories make our world. They hold real power and have real consequences. On a basic level, the stories we hear influence the things we believe, which in turn, influence the laws and policies making up the systems that govern us. So every aspect of how we present stories – how we read, watch and listen to them – matters.

CRIN is looking for a Communications Officer to help us tell a new story about children’s rights by supporting our external communications. Working under the guidance of the Communications Manager, this role is focused on the day-to-day delivery and editorial quality of CRIN’s digital channels – including our social media, short- and medium-form articles and newsletters. You should feel comfortable translating CRIN’s legal and advocacy work into clear, timely and engaging content across different platforms.

CRIN works on children’s rights issues that are emerging, neglected or impossible to ignore. This means that we have a number of Policy Leads who work across diverse topics, with varying needs and demands. The Communications Officer would play a key role in responding to incoming publication requests, team events and world news. You would ensure content is edited, adapted and shared on time without compromising on the quality or care of our messages. This role is ideal for an early-career writer, journalist or communications professional looking to work in international human rights. You would have the autonomy to publish and manage our day-to-day social media, and to make editorial decisions, within set parameters.

What you'll be doing

Working with CRIN’s Creative Director, Communications Manager and communications team, you will:

  • Draft, edit, schedule and publish online content, translating legal or policy material into accessible formats across key platforms (e.g. LinkedIn, Instagram);
  • During quieter periods, work with the Graphic Designer to develop copy for visuals, infographics and digital assets that share CRIN’s vision (and the issues we work on) with newer audiences;
  • Maintain a weekly and monthly social media calendar within a wider organisational communications plan;
  • Act as a copyeditor for short- and medium-form content (typically between 1–2,000 words) – prioritising clarity, consistency and accessible narratives;
  • Organise, edit and send a monthly e-mail newsletter using established templates;
  • Support the upkeep of our website (including the Latest Stories page) by publishing and updating content, applying editorial guidelines across existing pages;
  • Where skills allow, contribute to multimedia storytelling (e.g. basic video editing);
  • Monitor social media and newsletter performance, and provide basic reporting on engagement and reach. We focus on quality over quantity, but you should know how to create a snapshot of impact before and after campaigns.

Knowledge, skills and experience

We are looking for someone who:

Essential

  • Is an excellent writer and editor, with experience adapting complex or technical material for public audiences;
  • Has experience managing organisational social media accounts
  • Has strong attention to detail and sound editorial judgement
  • Is comfortable juggling multiple requests and prioritising work within an agreed strategy
  • Is familiar with digital publishing tools and platforms (experience with Canva, Squarespace and Mailchimp is an asset)
  • Has an interest in human rights, social justice and working within international spaces
  • Is values-led – and thinks outside of the box when it comes to traditional narratives
  • Thrives in a small, diverse and collaborative team

Desirable

  • Experience with video editing or multimedia tools is desirable but not essential

Beyond your skills and experience, we’re looking for someone with a genuine interest in working at an organisation that focuses on cutting-edge human rights issues in creative ways. As a taster, some of the issues we work on include climate justice for current and future generations, digital rights, preventing sexual violence, ending child military recruitment and how children’s rights are impacted by counter-terrorism measures.

How to apply

We are not big fans of formulaic responses. We want to know who you are, how you think, what your principles are and why you want to work with us.*

To begin with, please read The CRIN Code. We hope you agree with it, as it guides all of our work.

Still interested? Then please send us the following:

  • A short CV (no more than two pages);
  • A short written piece (no more than one page) about an issue, campaign, or piece of writing that shaped how you think about justice;
  • One example of your writing or digital communications work.

We will acknowledge all applications that we receive, but will not be able to provide feedback on applications that are not shortlisted. Thank you for taking the time to submit to us; we’re looking forward to learning more about your work :)

*Note: For this application and the execution of this role, we ask that you write without the support of large language learning models. The Communications Officer role is mostly about, well, communicating – and communicating through writing. We want to find another writer to connect with our audiences. Relationships matter within the team, too. We should be able to hear your authentic voice.

We welcome and encourage applications from candidates who are under-represented in the creative industries.

Please make sure that you state in your application that you found this role via Creative Access.
