Data engineer (12 month FTC)

Salary: £50,000 - £60,000 dependent on experience and location (+bonus +benefits)
Location: This role can be based in our London, Sheffield or Edinburgh offices, with a blend of in-office (3 days) and homeworking (2 days) per week.

The function of the Business Intelligence and Data Engineering team is to develop and support enterprise-level data insight solutions and reporting solutions in response to business-driven requests for change. The solutions must always strive to be accurate and available, making them a trusted source of business information, and ensuring best practices are followed and comply with IT and industry standards.
The role encompasses working as a key member of a team of skilled specialists comprising permanent and contract staff members and managed by the Data Engineering Manager. The team is responsible for maintaining existing solutions, implementing new solutions, and providing technical input into strategic projects.
Working policy for this role would be remote but expect to come to the office 1 to 2 days a month for team meetings or as and when required.
Responsibilities
- Managing the existing Datawarehouse solution of more than 4 TB in size with 140+ workflows and 700+ scheduled reports.
- Play a key role in Data Migration project.
- Creation and maintenance of:
- SQL Server Integration Services ETL processes
- T-SQL development
- Azure Data Factory pipelines
- Cognos Framework Manager Data Modelling and Cognos Analytics report development
- Power BI Data Modelling and report development
- Influence design of Datawarehouse/Azure Data Bricks/Synapse solutions using best practice.
- Monitoring of Datawarehouse day-end processing and performance
- Translation of business requirements into technical specifications.
- Work alongside Data Engineering Manager to deliver the Hachette IT Data Strategy.
- Create and maintain documentation to assist in cross-team training and handover.
Knowledge, skills and experience
- Industry-recognised Data Warehouse Design qualification (such as Ralph Kimball)
- Awareness of Analysis tools/techniques like B.E.A.M (Business Events Analysis Model) or SSADM (Structured Systems Analysis and Design Method)
- Experience in developing SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS) solutions
- Experience in developing T-SQL and other programming and scripting languages such as Python/Perl/ Powershell/VB Script/Scala
- Experience in Azure Data tech stack which includes Synapse analytics, Databricks, Data Factory etc..
- Experience in developing CI/CD pipelines using Azure DevOps
- Experience in using either Cognos Analytics or Power BI reporting solutions.
- Experience in either Cognos Framework Manager Data Modelling or Power BI Data Modelling
- Experience working in Data Migration & Data Cleansing workstreams.
- Good problem-solving, analytical, and organisation skills
- Flexibility and adaptability
- Ability to create and maintain strong working relationships with colleagues and customers
Desirable
- Experience of API development / Maintenance
- Experience in extracting data from SAP backend tables or good understanding of SAP backend tables
- Experience in SSAS (SQL Server Analysis Services)
- Database Administrator skillsets
