Bonnier Books UK is looking for a highly creative and talented editor or commissioning editor with a special interest in non-fiction to join our Templar Books imprint.

Founded in 1978, Templar publishes original, illustrated children’s books designed to inspire curious minds. From vibrant board and novelty books to high-end, commercial picture books and non-fiction for the primary school age range, Templar creates innovative and creative books for all readers. We have a reputation for cleverly conceived concept publishing with an emphasis on paper innovation, stylish design and contemporary illustration for an international audience.
Key responsibilities
- Managing all aspects of own titles throughout the publishing process, ensuring books publish on time and to the highest standard
- Taking responsibility for all commercial aspects of book projects, e.g. costings, contract negotiation, budgets and schedules
- Developing new concepts, reviewing submissions and acquisitions as well as commissioning and briefing authors and illustrators
- Developing and establishing new author/agent relationships
- Writing sales material and back cover copy
- Coordinating out-of-house editorial processes, e.g. freelance editors/packagers, researchers, fact-checkers and proofreaders
- Working closely with colleagues in design, sales, marketing, foreign rights, production and business affairs to ensure the smooth process of titles at all stages
- Representing and promoting own titles, including presentations at sales conferences
- Identifying publishing opportunities, maintaining own market awareness, and developing and proposing new book ideas to contribute at creative meetings
Knowledge, skills and experience
- Experience working as an editor or commissioning editor on illustrated children’s books, including negotiating and preparing contracts, scheduling and budget management
- A thorough understanding of the illustrated children’s book market and the ability to apply sound commercial awareness and judgement
- Experience and passion for nurturing authors, editing texts and commissioning commercial titles, as well as an ability to brainstorm and develop innovative ideas in-house
- A strong eye for illustration, confident in developing flat plans and detailed illustration briefs, in collaboration with design
- Excellent copy-editing and proofreading skills
- Experience of working with freelance editors and packagers
- The ability to work confidently in InDesign
- Knowledge of Biblio or similar publishing management system
- Knowledge and experience of co-edition publishing
- Great organisational skills and the ability to prioritise and manage multiple projects to tight deadlines
