Do you love history, archaeology and beautifully made books? Are you looking for a hands-on start to your publishing career in a team that blends creativity, rigour and collaboration?

We’re looking for a well-organised, enthusiastic and self-motivated editorial assistant to join our History & Archaeology list at Thames & Hudson – one of the world’s leading visual arts publishers. This is a brilliant opportunity for someone who is organised, curious and passionate about bringing ambitious ideas to life on the page.

You will assist the commissioning editor on a broad range of tasks spanning research, project development, author liaison and day-to-day editorial and administrative support, helping to deliver a creative, innovative and commercially successful programme of titles.

Responsibilities

As our editorial assistant, you will help shape and support a diverse list of history and archaeology titles from first concept to finished book. Every day will bring something different, but you can expect to:

  • Work closely with the commissioning editor on research, project development and shaping new ideas
  • Liaise with authors, museums, curators and internal teams to keep projects running smoothly
  • Support the editorial process – from preparing materials and checking proofs to coordinating freelancers
  • Keep production schedules on track and ensure information flows clearly across departments
  • Proofread meticulously to uphold our reputation for quality and accuracy
  • Maintain strong administrative systems, accurate documentation and contractual records
  • Help prepare and deliver sales material for our sales, comms and international rights teams

Knowledge, skills & experience

  • A degree in history or the humanities
  • A proven interest in historical subjects and visual culture
  • Strong organisational skills and the ability to juggle multiple projects at once
  • Impeccable written communication, excellent proofreading skills and a sharp eye for detail
  • Clear, confident communication skills with a diplomatic, collaborative approach
  • A proactive attitude and the ability to stay calm and focused under pressure
  • Confidence in exploring and adopting new digital tools and technologies
  • Good Microsoft Office skills; familiarity with Adobe InDesign and Acrobat Pro is a bonus (training provided)
  • Experience in a publishing, museum, gallery or office environment is helpful

You are reliable, curious, adaptable and quietly determined. You enjoy working with precision, love learning new things, and take real pride in producing work of a high standard. You thrive in a team setting and are excited by the idea of contributing to a world-class publishing programme.
