This is an exciting opportunity to use your experience of working with communities to make a real difference to the creation of London Museum, one of Europe's biggest cultural projects.
Working with colleagues in our dynamic and friendly Engagement team, you will assist with the practical planning, coordination and day-to-day delivery of a community-led public events programme and temporary creative community space as part of the museum's Smithfield Neighbourhood Programme.
This programme is a key part of our work to build strong relationships with local communities in advance of the opening of the new London Museum in West Smithfield in 2026, and to work together with community partners, participants and audiences whose experiences and voices are underrepresented in the museum’s collections and the stories we tell.
Activities will include the ongoing day-to-day running of the museum's temporary creative community space, assisting with the delivery of creative projects with local residents and community groups, and supporting summer play programmes for families, community tours of the London Museum construction site and Open House weekend events.
Main responsibilities
- Being a friendly and welcoming first point of contact for internal and external users of the temporary creative community space and building good relationships with local residents, community partners and stakeholders.
- Responsible for delivering the effective day-to-day practical and administrative aspects of the space, including coordinating bookings, supporting freelancers and colleagues during activities, ordering materials and making sure equipment is available, and ensuring that the space is clean, maintained and well-organised.
- Working closely with the Creative Producer, support the preparatory work prior to the temporary creative community space opening to the public, including supporting the planning and delivery of design, fit-out, community consultation and welcome events, for example by researching and building good relationships with local organisations and community groups, arranging meetings, sending out invitations to events, ordering refreshments, helping with the set up and take down of events and with event evaluation, and taking notes at meetings.
- Working closely with the Creative Producer to support the delivery of activities in the local area, including a summer holiday programme of family-friendly play events, community tours of the new London Museum site and Open House events. This will include supporting the preparation of activities and events, liaising with partners and participants, and assisting in the running of activities.
- Maintaining a central bank of information relating to the temporary creative community space and associated programmes, for example logging participant numbers, helping to create project, evaluation and consultation reports, and completing risk assessments, maintenance schedules, consent forms, freelancer agreements and logging partner contact details in accordance with the museum’s policies and procedures, using Microsoft Word and Excel.
- Providing information about the programme for inclusion in progress reports to senior management and funders.
- Working with other Coordinators in the department to ensure the consistent application of systems, procedures, templates and tools.
- Responding to general enquiries about the programme.
- Being an effective advocate for the programme internally and externally.
Knowledge, skills and experience
- Previous experience of working in a museum is not required and you do not need to have academic qualifications.
- We are looking for someone who is highly organised with great practical problem solving skills, who enjoys working collaboratively with a wide range of people, and who has a passion for supporting community-led activities and projects within an arts, heritage or community setting.
- You will have an awareness of the complexity of London's society, an appreciation of the inequalities experienced by marginalised communities, and a commitment to putting inclusion and anti-racist practice at the heart of your work.
