Play a key role behind the scenes at an iconic cultural institution by leading the technical teams and maintenance services that keep everything running smoothly.

The National Gallery has an opportunity for a facilities maintenance supervisor to join the building and facilities department. This post is a key role within the buildings and facilities team and responsible for the delivery and management of mechanical, electrical and plumbing (MEP) maintenance services across the National Gallery. It involves managing the term maintenance contractor and ensuring that environmental conditions and building systems are maintained to a high standard throughout the Gallery.

The ideal candidate should be self-driven, capable of working effectively as part of a team, and able to communicate clearly with colleagues across various departments. This position offers the successful candidate an opportunity to combine innovation and experience with a structured approach to problem-solving, ensuring the reliable and efficient operation of plant and equipment.


Knowledge, skills & experience

Technical knowledge

  • Ability to advise managers and staff about the impact and coordination of proposed alterations and refurbishment works
  • Up to date in health and safety regulations and ensure requirements are met for the contract including review of method statements and Risk assessments for work carried out
  • Knowledge of environmental conditions, engineering services, and system replacements to optimise and reduce energy consumption
  • Higher national certificate (HNC) or equivalent in mechanical/electrical discipline

Management/supervising skills

  • Ability to manage the (ME&P) engineering services through the incumbent site maintenance contracted team (Approx 20 in number), together with ensuring the environmental conditions and associated plant are maintained to a high standard throughout the Galley
  • Minor project planning and management including application of departmental resources, consultants, staff and budgets

Problem solving skills

  • A systematic approach to problem solving is required to achieve the safest, efficient and cost -effective methods of working within the constraints set by the building, the collection and its users

Communication skills

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and liaison abilities with internal and external stakeholders
  • Strong written communication skills including the production of clear reports, specifications, procedural notes and instructions will also be a major part of the work
