Shakespeare’s Globe is currently seeking a Theatre General Manager on a 5-month fixed term basis. The Theatre General Manager will work directly with the Executive Director of Theatre (EDT) and alongside the Artistic Director (AD) and Senior Leadership Team (SLT) to support and guide the smooth running of the Theatre Department.
The role will manage the department at senior management level, working closely with the EDT to track progress of our short and long term aims and objectives. They will manage day to day activities, working closely with the Deputy General Manager (DGM), to ensure these are supported and achieved. They will co-ordinate with key members of Production to ensure the resources of both the theatre and staff are deployed effectively to deliver programmed work.
The Theatre General Manager will work closely with the Head of People & Culture to ensure best working practices are in place for the department of permanent staff and our extensive freelance workforce.
Knowledge, skills and experience
- Experience in people management in a creative industry, pastoral care and the ability to effectively influence a large, dynamic team of employees and freelancers.
- The ability to manage multiple projects, to prioritise and ensure successful delivery of short-term goals and long-term objectives.
- Experience of managing difficult conversations and an understanding of best practice in complaints procedures including grievances and disciplinaries, ideally with experience of leading investigations.
- Experience of HR, recruitment and an awareness of the ever-changing culture of best working practice in the Arts sector.
- An interest in working culture; how to create safe and positive spaces and a commitment to work on Access, diversity, equality and anti-racism.
- A good understanding of theatrical performance needs and logistics, ideally in a producing organisation. Experience in drafting, reviewing and managing contracts and associated negotiations.
- Emotionally intelligent, ability to approach situations with common sense, personal integrity and high levels of discretion.
- The capacity to respond well to the pressures and demands of a busy working environment with resilience.
