Are you passionate about environmental issues, community engagement, and inclusive programming? Gain vital experience producing film events in Scotland with this exciting 4-month internship.

Part of the BFI Film Audience Network, Film Hub Scotland is one of eight Hubs set up across the UK to extend film choice, increase and broaden film audiences, and enhance opportunities for audiences to engage with and learn about film. We support a network of like-minded film exhibitors – from film societies to multiplexes – to work together to better serve Scotland’s diverse population. We provide Hub members with a range of funding opportunities, screening programmes, training, networking events and audience research, helping Scotland’s exhibitors become truly inclusive, reaching as many new and existing audiences as possible.

About the scheme

The New Producer Scheme is an exciting training opportunity for people who’d like to better understand how to produce film events for audiences in Scotland. The programme aims to provide a paid placement opportunity to work for a cinema or festival within Scotland. There are four roles available for individuals to create and produce film screening activity for an established film organisation. New Producers will be supported with training and will work closely with their Host organisation to learn all aspects of programming, marketing and delivering film screenings.

This is the sixth edition of the Scheme. To date 24 participants have successfully undertaken the programme. Read about our 2023/24 cohort here, and the events from our 2024/25 cohort here.

About the host organisation

North East Arts Touring (NEAT) is a pioneering arts organisation based in rural Aberdeenshire. Since 1985, we have championed access to theatre and film in remote and rural communities through volunteer-led programming and innovative outreach. Our Community Cinema Network, launched in 2012, was Scotland’s first, and we continue to support rural venues with mobile cinema equipment hire, licensing, and marketing support. Our work spans creative projects in rural and urban areas, including initiatives supporting young promoters, aiding mental health recovery, widening access to theatre for young audiences, and supporting grassroots culture and heritage groups.

We seek a New Producer to lead a climate-focused film project in collaboration with the Barn, North East Scotland Climate Action Network (NESCAN), and Aberdeen For A Fairer World (AFW). You don’t need any previous film experience, just a passion for cinema and an interest in working in the industry.

Key activities

The New Producer will:

  • Curate and deliver three screenings in rural communities while devising and providing outreach and audience development activities.
  • Secure screening licences.
  • Develop and implement a marketing plan.
  • Manage the project budget.
  • Evaluate the project's overall impact.
  • Training in mobile cinema operation will be provided.

What you'll learn

In a supportive environment, the New Producers will:

  • Develop skills in event production including marketing, negotiations, fundraising and curation to deliver their own events within NEAT (North East Arts Touring)’s current events delivery model.
  • Participate in training sessions with industry professionals and meet others on the scheme.
  • Gain insights into programming, audience development with accessible engagement, event marketing, and career progression.
  • Play an active role in programming, producing and delivering at least three film screenings and events with NEAT.
  • Be expected to participate in internal meetings, take part in scheme-wide learning sessions, and deliver their events in line with the host organisation’s delivery model – with all activities completed by 28th November 2025.

What we're looking for

  • Individuals who are passionate about film and curious about how the film exhibition sector in Scotland works.
  • You should have good communication and organisational skills, be eager to learn, and enjoy working both independently and as part of a team.
  • While previous experience in film or events is not required, any involvement in creative, community, or cultural projects—whether paid or voluntary—will be helpful.
  • An awareness of different audiences and an interest in engaging diverse communities is a plus.
  • Creativity, attention to detail, and a willingness to try new things.
  • Formal film training or experience is not necessary, as all participants will be supported through on-the-job learning and training sessions.
  • There are no specific academic qualifications required. However, please note: this opportunity is not open to full-time students.

You will be managed by NEAT’s Creative Director and supported by partner organisations. Flexible and hybrid working options are available. NEAT is committed to inclusive recruitment and fair work practices. We welcome applicants from all educational backgrounds and are particularly keen to hear from those who have faced barriers to entering the film exhibition industry.
