Shape the future of digital publishing by leading the strategy, acquisitions, and product development behind innovative academic resources.

This is an exciting opportunity to play a pivotal role in content acquisitions and product development. The publisher will be responsible for driving forward the growth of a defined set of digital resources within the humanities and social sciences portfolio, leading on content acquisitions. The publisher will have responsibility for signing partnership deals, and creating products entirely through such partnerships – whether from print licensors or other media, including archives. They will be an experienced digital publisher and a positive, proactive self-starter with strong creative vision and an ability to work with stakeholders both within and outside the business to champion the products and work toward their success throughout the product lifecycle. This is a critical role within a friendly, ambitious and experienced team, focusing on a rapidly growing portfolio of products within the humanities and social sciences (HSS).


Responsibilities

Business ownership and strategy development

  • Responsible for developing a digital product strategy for commercial and strategic deliverables of a suite of HSS digital resources
  • Responsible for creation of business plans and profit and loss statements, and presenting to internal stakeholders

Commissioning

  • New product ideation and proactive acquisition lead
  • Managing market research, writing and presenting business plans for product concepts
  • Contract negotiation and relationship building with external partners

Digital product development

  • Serving as project director/digital editorial lead for a suite of HSS products
  • Participating in all phases of the product life cycle, with decision-making authority on issues regarding content
  • Recruiting and managing product-level advisory boards

This role will include line management of one staff member at present and may include travel to conferences and key library events, as required.


Knowledge, skills and experience

  • An entrepreneurial spirit and the imagination to conceive of large-scale projects that excite and engage end users
  • Self-starter, focused on the competitive landscape, who thrives on winning business and moving new ideas and products forward
  • Good interpersonal and negotiation skills
  • Drive, determination and commercial creativity
  • Solid experience in academic publishing, with a demonstrable track record of successfully advancing large-scale products – ideally from partnerships, and ideally digital
  • A demonstrable ability to work well with others to advance common goals and a successful track record of working with partners / third party content providers – whether authors or licensors
  • A demonstrable understanding of the value of the editorial process to product success
  • A track record of meeting targets and deadlines
  • Knowledge of emerging trends and issues in the academic marketplace, particularly in relation to digital products and the academic market


Additional information

The role can be based at our London office 50 Bedford Square, London, WC1B 3DP, or at our Oxford office, Kemp House, Chawley Park, Cumnor Hill, Oxford OX2 9PH on a hybrid-working pattern of 2 days office based / 3 days home based (or fully office based if preferred). Allocated office days for this role are: Wednesday and Thursday.
