Pyramid lies as the heart of Octopus, creating commercially smart custom publishing across markets (with the US particularly key) generating trend-driven IP projects and non-book product, often regenerating gems from the backlist.
What you'll be doing
As publisher for Pyramid you will be leading the commercial and creative success of a key area of Octopus's publishing and the role includes:
- Revenue and margin target responsibility for a minimum of £1.5m per annum with a plan for growth
- People management responsibility for a creative team of three
- Working closely with all markets to conceive, pitch and create custom publishing for specific customers, commission new IP projects in line with market trends and demands and lead the reissue programme to ensure the commercial potential of the backlist is maximised
- Leading Octopus on non-book product
- Establishing brand-licensing partnerships and creating commercially successful brand-lead books and products
- Ensuring the Pyramid programme is delivered in line with budget and schedule and to a high standard
- Developing strong internal relationships to champion the list across sales, marketing and campaign teams to ensure everyone has what they need to sell your books to the widest possible audience
Who we are looking for
We are looking for a dynamic, creative and commercially focused publisher to lead our Pyramid list and to drive forward an internationally focused list of custom publishing, IP projects and non-book products.
The ideal candidate will have strong illustrated book publishing experience, excellent knowledge of trade and non-trade customers in key markets, including the US, and the ability to respond fast to emerging trends, potential brand and licensing partnerships. You will have excellent relationship-management and author-care skills, with the ability to motivate teams and champion your books effectively to a wide range of people.
- A track record of successful publishing in lifestyle publishing, particularly through direct approaches and IP generation
- A creative and commercial mindset – consumer focused and engaged with market trends within lifestyle publishing within UK, US, non-trade and international markets
- Ability to position concepts commercially, then successfully drive them through to publication and beyond
- A confident negotiator and problem solver, motivated by targets, budgets and profitability
- Excellent relationship-management and author-care skills
- Entrepreneurial and an independent decision maker
- Strong strategic focus
- Understanding of digital arena
- Highly developed commissioning and influencing skills
