Senior editor, Children's Illustrated Non-Fiction (maternity cover)

Salary pay range: £30,750 - £36,400
Contract: The role is a full-time 12 month fixed term contract position
We have an exciting opportunity for an experienced, enthusiastic editor to join our illustrated non-fiction team as maternity cover for a period of 12 months from February 2025.
Bloomsbury Children’s Books is home to a flourishing non-fiction list, boasting best-selling, award-winning authors and illustrators, and publishing a wide variety of internationally- acclaimed non-fiction books from picture books and gift books to mono books for children aged 7+.
Reporting to the Head of Illustrated Publishing, you’ll be joining a vibrant team with whom you’ll work in a fast-paced, creative environment. This role may suit a freelancer with considerable experience looking for a more permanent position for a time. This will not be a commissioning role.
Responsibilities
Working closely with the Head of Illustrated Publishing and the wider non-fiction team, you’ll look after a number of your own titles. Your core responsibilities will include:
- Liaising with authors, illustrators and agents as required
- Delivering the highest standard of structural editing, copy-editing and proofreading
- Ensuring projects run on schedule and are delivered within budget
- Liaising with out-of-house copy-editors, proof-readers and other freelancers
- Drafting excellent cover copy for covers, catalogues and AIs
- Working with our editorial assistant, to maintain bibliographic data, schedules and publishing programmes
- Running acquisition P&Ls and negotiating contractual terms when required
- Presenting and briefing titles at key internal meetings, including acquisitions and cover briefing
Knowledge, skills and experience
- The successful candidate will have significant demonstrated editorial experience, ideally within a non-fiction environment
- They will be well-organised with excellent communication skills and should enjoy working both independently, and as part of a collaborative, supportive team
Additional information
The role is based at our London office 50 Bedford Square, London, WC1B 3DP on a hybrid-working pattern of 2 days office based / 3 days home based (or fully office based if preferred). Allocated office days for this role are: Monday and Tuesday
