
Senior sales manager / head of non trade sales (interim)
Salary range: £40,000-£55,000 per annum, depending on experience
Contract: Twelve-month fixed-term contract
Reports to: Deputy Trade Sales Directors
Location: 5th Floor, HYLO, 105 Bunhill Row, London, EC1Y 8LZ
Working pattern: Hybrid – minimum of two days per week in the office; up to three days per week working from home

An exciting opportunity for an organised and enthusiastic individual to work across the entirety of Bonnier Book UK’s publishing, leading the non-trade sales team.
We are seeking an experienced non-trade senior sales manager/head of non-trade to join the Bonnier Books UK’s non-trade sales team on an interim basis. As a non-trade senior sales manager/head of non-trade, you will be taking on major account responsibilities and working on many projects at once. This could be anything from conceiving the idea for a custom novelty children’s book to discussing print runs with multiple parties for mono titles.
The role would cover both BBUK’s Children’s and Adult publishing. This spans a huge range of titles and offers opportunity to learn and sell across every category of a major trade publisher. The right person for this role will be capable of managing the non-trade team, ensuring budgets are met, as well as keeping track of their own customers independently and developing good relationships with buyers.
Proven organisational skills and the ability to prioritise effectively will be key. Training will be provided for internal systems used: Biblio, SeeView, PowerBI. Working in the non-trade team offers a unique opportunity to gain experience in an entrepreneurial and independent part of the business. Ultimately this role will be fundamental in ensuring the non-trade team reach their annual budgets and develop new business.
Key responsibilities
- Leadership of the non-trade team and management of two team members
- Reaching out to new business and building the customer base for the non-trade sales team; pinpointing titles in the programme to focus on for business development
- Processing orders and updating assigned customers with title information. Understanding and implementing individual methods of communication for each of the customers assigned to the role.
- Liaising internally to communicate the risks and opportunities of the non-trade sector to the business
- Attending internal meetings including acquisitions and being a lead for non-trade for defined divisional responsibilities
- Advocating for the non-trade team and sharing customer-specific points within internal meetings
- Understanding financial targets regarding assigned customers and working on the annual budget
- A keen understanding and experience of the production side of non-trade; costing up books, ‘upspeccing and despeccing’, calculating margins
- A strong sense of organisation and ability to juggle many projects at once
- Providing support and organisation at external events like bookfairs, where required
- Liaising with all other departments, including Editorial, Publicity, Marketing, Production, and Design
Knowledge, skills and experience
- The ideal candidate would have experience working as in non-trade and in sales but all candidates with a publishing sales background will be considered
- Key accounts where experience would be welcome – The Works, Baker & Taylor, The White Company, Book Trust, Bookspeed, Wholesalers, Scholastic
- MS Office skills, including Word, Excel and PowerPoint
- Strong analytical skills and commercial awareness
- Excellent attention to detail
- Excellent organisation and time management
- Strong communication skills
- An enthusiasm for books and reading
