
Trainee make-up assistant (Crookhaven)

BBC Studios Kids & Family are looking for expressions of interest for a Trainee Make-Up Assistant opportunity on Crookhaven.
Shot and produced in Belfast, Northern Ireland, Crookhaven is a thrilling family adventure series centred around pickpocketing genius Gabriel and his archrival Penelope, as a group of students compete for the prestigious Crooked Cup at a secret school for crooks.
Trainees will gain first-hand experience working within a high-end TV drama production environment alongside an experienced make-up team.
Eligibility
- Be 18 years or older at the point of the start of the traineeship
- Be fully available and based in Belfast full-time from 20th July to 14th November
- Have a qualification which allows them to apply make-up (HNC, HND or degree equivalent)
The role
We don’t mind whether your experience comes from weddings, theatre, fashion, retail, salon or special effects, as long as you have professional make-up training and a genuine passion for TV drama.
We're especially keen to hear from Trainees who've studied or have lived experience of working with Black hair, and make up for people of colour.
Working under the instruction of the Make-Up Designer/Supervisor, you will gain valuable insight into how a professional TV drama make-up department operates. Using the knowledge and experience gained through your training, you will support the team in preparing actors for set and maintaining production standards throughout filming.
Duties may include:
- Assisting actors with make-up preparation
- Providing touch-ups and changes on standby
- Supporting continuity requirements
- Organising paperwork and department admin
- Ordering and managing stock
- Shopping and running department errands
- Supporting the wider make-up team during production

To be successful in this trainee role, you must have the following:
- Expected to have own basic kit.
- Have a vocational qualification at Level 2 in Media Make-Up and/or Level 2-3 NVQ in Hairdressing (or equivalent).
- A genuine interest in make-up and evidence of pro-actively seeking ways to gain more experience and knowledge
- Experience of generating original creative ideas and opinions of your own, as well as those inspired by others, that you’re excited to share and develop
- Experience of working to a brief within a specified timeframe
- Experience and examples of when you have worked as part of a team and shared tasks; communicating information and taking direction from others.
- Experience and examples of when you have worked in environments where there are conflicting priorities and problems to solve
- Interest in TV drama including BBC Studios content
