Location: Brighton

Lead the planning, marketing and delivery of events for an independent bookshop specialising in books by Black authors.

Afrori Books is an independent bookshop in Brighton. It is a specialist bookshop, selling adult and children’s books by Black authors, a small selection of gifts, tea, filter coffee and biscuits.

We are looking for a capable, creative and ambitious events and marketing manager to take ownership of our busy events programme, creating and managing an exciting, eclectic and profitable programme of adult and school events, and work alongside our social media manager to manage the marketing of the events calendar. We are a small family business run by Black women, and we are looking for someone to join our team, who shares our passion to see Black creatives flourish and have equity.

Responsibilities include:

Events:

  • Build relationships with publicists to ensure we are front of mind when planning book tours.
  • Keep on top of publication schedules to pro-actively pitch for events.
  • Liaise with events venues / schools to book in events where necessary
  • Organise chair for each event.
  • Upload events onto the website, and other platforms where appropriate
  • Monitor and report on sales
  • Create marketing campaigns to publicise events – this could involve but is not limited.
  • To creating digital assets, physical posters / leaflets / flyers, social media, press releases and media liaison, email marketing.
  • Maintain communication with the publicist, author and venue in the lead up to the event to ensure that everyone has all the information they need.
  • Ensure books are ordered in suitable time for the event, and arrange returns of surplus books after the event, aiming to minimise returns.
  • Manage events or arrange for a suitable deputy.
  • Manage the profit and loss of each event aiming to maximise profitability.
  • Provide regular reporting on revenue raised.
  • Build relationships with external venues to ensure Afrori Books is first choice for bookselling at external organised events

Skills and Experience needed:

  • Excellent organisation skills with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously to a Deadline.
  • Excellent communication skills – written and verbal, with the ability to build relationships at all levels
  • Level-headed and calm under pressure
  • Friendly, outgoing, approachable personality
  • Able to work independently and be self-motivating.
  • Attention to detail is key.
  • The ability use spreadsheets to model event profitability.

It is expected that the successful candidate will spend most days working in the bookshop, but some flexibility is possible. This role equals to 2 days per week. There will be the requirement to work some evenings and weekends where necessary.
