Proposed salary range: £55,300 - £65,300 depending on relevant skills, knowledge and experience. The expected salary range for this role reflects internal benchmarking and external market insights.
Celebrate classical music on a national stage; BBC Audio North is looking for a confident leader to help deliver exceptional Radio 3 content from our Salford base.
BBC Audio North is the single biggest supplier of BBC radio programmes and podcasts made outside of London. We love audio and make lots of it – both speech and music. This role is all about Radio 3 and our dedication to excellence in classical music production in its broadest sense. In the past 18 months we have transferred production of many programmes from our base in London to MediaCity, Salford. Half of all Radio 3 hours are now produced in Salford doubling the size of our first-class team. We make a portfolio of programmes including Breakfast, Classical Live and Through The Night; specialist shows like Choral Evensong and Early Music Show; innovative programmes like Music Map and Words and Music; a whole range of broadcast concerts including the Proms. We aim to bring our enthusiasm for this music to our audiences via content on BBC Radio 3, BBC Sounds, on social - live or pre-recorded, in the studio or in the concert hall. With a visionary controller, record audiences and station of the year for Radio 3, we are ambitious to bring classical to even more audiences across the UK. We are looking for a leader to help us deliver this exciting new era for Radio 3 and classical music at the BBC.

Key responsibilities and impact
- The Content Editor is a key member of the leadership team in BBC Audio North.
- They will lead multiple programme strands in response to the controller’s vision.
- They will inspire their team, encouraging staff development and nurturing new talent.
- Generating bold new ideas and formats is an essential as is pitching to win new commissions.
- They will collaborate with classical production colleagues, BBC Performing Groups and other external partners to reflect audiences, music, venues and voices from across the UK.
Knowledge, skills and experience
- Demonstrable experience in music/speech radio production with a passion for classical music and the BBC’s purpose to delight and inspire millions of listeners
- Proven leadership experience, including supporting and championing staff development setting a culture of continual feedback
- A clear communication style with leadership experience of getting things done quickly, fairly and consistently
- Resilience to lead change responding to market and audience trends
- Track record in innovation motivating colleagues to take creative risks and develop content to appeal to diverse audiences
- An understanding of the station’s output and aims
- An aptitude for diplomacy; developing and maintaining key relationships with internal and external partners
