The Financial Times has an exciting opportunity for aspiring sub-editors from the Black community.
Do you love words and hate typos? Are you interested in working on big news stories but not necessarily as a reporter? If so, then you may be suited to a career as a sub-editor in a global news organisation.
The FT’s global, award-winning editorial team represents the gold standard in journalism, seeking depth, originality and balance that differentiates the FT from the pack and engages subscribers.
The Fellowship is a six-month, paid contract in the heart of the FT’s London newsroom. The successful candidate will be trained by experienced sub-editors on the crucial final stages of the news production process. You will learn how to sense-check articles, edit for accuracy and clarity, and write engaging headlines and other display copy before pressing the button to publish.
What you will learn
- You will be embedded in the FT’s two main sub-editing teams, helping produce the newspaper and working on the digital publishing desk
- You will sub-edit articles for the newspaper’s different editions, cutting them to length and writing headlines, standfirsts and captions. You will learn how to lay out pages and sign them off before they go to print
- You will revise-edit content for FT.com, learning to hit the highest standards of accuracy and quality, often under tight time pressure. You will be taught how to write engaging digital headlines and add visual components to engage readers
Knowledge, skills and experience
The successful candidate will:
- Show an interest in current affairs and financial news
- Care deeply about accuracy and good grammar
- Be aware of what makes an attention-grabbing headline, both in print and online
- Be capable of keeping a cool head under deadline pressure
