If you love the natural world, are excited by the idea of creating content for a pre-school audience and can’t wait to kickstart your career in TV, this opportunity to work with an award-winning team in Bristol could be for you...

BBC Studios Natural History Unit (NHU) is the leading producer of wildlife programming, creating award-winning content with a world class reputation.

Their content ranges from ambitious landmarks for BBC One and iPlayer (Green Planet, Dynasties, and Planet Earth III) to children’s programming (Deadly Mission Shark and Andy’s Adventures), as well as ground-breaking adventure, formatted, presenter led, feature docs and event programming such as Endangered for Discovery Channel, Prehistoric Planet for Apple TV+ and live programming such as the BAFTA winning Springwatch for the BBC.

BBC Studios are looking for a Bristol based Runner for the award-winning Natural History series, Andy’s Adventures. The role will involve running duties in the green room and on the studio floor, organising food and refreshments for the crew throughout the filming day, shopping trips for supplies, purchasing materials and props from external suppliers and delivering rushes to the local post-production house on a daily basis.

The team will be based at the Bottle Yard Studios in South Bristol for the majority of the contract. Time before and after the studio filming would be spent at the new BBC Studios main office in central Bristol. On the job training will be provided and the successful applicant will receive ongoing mentor support.

This is a fantastic opportunity to gain experience of green screen and VFX as well as traditional runner responsibilities, whilst working as part of an exciting and dynamic team.

What you will learn

  • You will gain an understanding of what is involved in setting up a studio shoot and the roles involved
  • First-hand experience of the television production lifecycle; from pre-production to production, through to post production of the show and a basic understanding of what is involved in green screen / CSO production and how this feeds into a VFX workflow
  • The opportunity to complete industry leading mandatory training in areas including Health & Safety, Data protection and Impartiality
  • Basic research, factchecking and there may be opportunities for creating additional content associated with the series/
  • A basic understanding of a number of BBC systems and processes including Buy/Book/Order, QuickOrder+ and MyRisks.

What we are looking for:

  • A candidate with a full clean driving licence (this is a requirement for the role)
  • A positive attitude and great communication skills to build strong working relationships with the crew, presenter and studio team
  • Confidence and resilience to sustain long days in the studio and the ability to work closely with production team members at all levels
  • Good time management and organisational skills with the initiative to work both independently and as part of a team
  • The ability to efficiently prioritise a conflicting workload and the ability to problem-solve and suggest effective solutions
  • Experience of managing budgets / expenses and keeping track of expenditure in a professional environment
  • Demonstrable interest in television production, ideally an interest in Natural History content and wildlife filmmaking.
