About World Book Day
World Book Day is the reading for fun charity, we champion reading for fun through our annual event in March – with its joy and celebration – we encourage more children to read for fun, and raise awareness of the difference reading makes to their lives. The charity aims to give every child and young person – particularly those from disadvantaged background – a life-long habit of reading for pleasure, unlocking the improved life chances, well-being, and future success this brings.
The charity aims to give every child and young person – particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds – a life-long habit of reading for pleasure, unlocking the improved life chances, well-being, and future success this brings.
Only one in three young people likes reading but we’re determined to change this by inspiring them to see reading differently. Reading for pleasure is the single biggest indicator of a child’s future success – more than their family circumstances, their parents’ educational background or their income. We want to see more children, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds, with a life-long habit of reading for fun and the improved life chances this brings them.
Every year we work with publishers, booksellers, educators and libraries to provide free books to children, we do this by distributing free World Book Day £1/€1.50 tokens through schools and partners that can be redeemed against a free World Book Day title or £1/€1.50 off any other children’s title. In 2026 we distributed over 23 million tokens, with a record 3.2 million World Book Day books printed and distributed throughout the UK; 408,000 of these books were directly distributed to underserved communities through libraries and community partners.
The books dominated the all-category bestseller lists for the 5 weeks of token redemption period, with all 12 WBD books in the top 12 places in WBD week.
Through our year-round activities we support families, schools, libraries, bookshops and the wider community to help children read for fun.
