Curatorial fellow of British Paintings (22 month fixed term)

This is an exciting opportunity for someone who's ready to bring their art history background to the National Gallery.
The National Gallery is looking for a Curatorial Fellow of British Paintings. This post is a twenty-two-month traineeship, designed to introduce someone who has proven scholarly art historical background in European painting, especially British art, and with an interest in pursuing a museum career, to the responsibilities of curatorship in a national collection.
Responsibilities
Assisting with the care, display, research, management, and interpretation of the National Gallery’s collection:
- Reporting to the Senior Research Curator (History of Collecting), the Curatorial Fellow will be assigned to the Curator of British Paintings and to the research sections of the curatorial team, and will receive training in the care, display, research, and interpretation of the collection, in dealing with acquisitions, loans, rehangs and redisplays
- The post holder will also receive training in curating exhibitions, the delivery of public programmes dealing with public enquiries and ensuring collection information is up to date,
- The Curatorial Fellow post liaises with an essential range of museum functions such as art handling, framing, conservation, and scientific research, as well as communications, exhibitions, and education teams, as well as working with national and international partners.
Acting as a Gallery courier when accompanying paintings in the UK and abroad:
- The Curatorial Fellow will provide support to the Curator of British Paintings and the Senior Research Curator (History of Collecting).
- The Curatorial Fellow may be asked to assist in exhibition projects in different ways from evolution to conception (depending on timings, they may not see the project through to public opening).
Knowledge, skills, experience
- An undergraduate or postgraduate degree in Art History
- Knowledge of the field of British painting at either first degree level or postgraduate degree (either having taken optional modules or written a dissertation about British art)
- Ability to carry out independent scholarly research, including archival work, to a very high standard (high merit (65% and above) at degree level) in the field of British art
- Highly developed visual skills in relation to European paintings, especially in British art - the area covered by the post
- Fluency in English and a proven working knowledge of at least one of the main European languages (Italian, German, Dutch, French)
- Ability to write concisely and accurately in English, with an awareness of the needs of both specialist and general audiences
- Ability to prioritise tasks and meet deadlines
- Competent public speaker
- Broad IT skills
- Interest in how the Gallery communicates the results of its research to a broad public, using digital and other media
- Diplomatic and sensitive in dealing with a wide range of people from the public to lenders, owners, and dealers.
- Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively as a team player
- Demonstrable interest in curatorial work and in the history of the National Gallery
- Desire to promote fruitful discussions around diversity and inclusion in terms of gender, race, religion through chosen research projects within and beyond the Gallery
- Demonstrate personal accountability to work effectively to tight deadlines and finish off work to the highest of standards.

Salary range
