National Gallery are looking for a Senior Buildings and Facilities Manager to support the delivery of the capital improvement programme across the National Gallery. This post key role will be the planning and delivery of capital projects but also deputising for the head of department with the day to-day running of the department. This post will be responsible for project managing the larger and more complex projects with the assistance of specialised teams. The post holder will be a highly skilled project manager with experience planning and delivering projects within the historic environment, and on sites that are open to the public. They will also have experience of working as part of wider estates team and have a sound understanding of estate in both fabric and facilities management and project planning, whilst also having strategic and operational experience.

Responsibilities

  • To lead on the project management, development and delivery of large and more complex Capital Building/infrastructure projects, working closely with internal stakeholders
  • Assist the Head of Buildings in the management of the department by supporting, coaching and advising department managers on the delivery of their projects
  • Assists the Head of Buildings to develop a strategy for the maintenance and development of the Gallery buildings, in response to the Gallery’s Corporate Plan and changing building needs
  • Responsible for managing the logistics and coordination of projects on site as well as their delivery in the safest and most environmentally conscious manner
  • Accountable for ensuring solutions are high quality designs and innovation, but within the set limits of cost, programme, and scope/quality
  • Responsible for ensuring projects and programmes are delivered in the best way to minimise disruptions and operational risk to the business and provides operational flexibility and optimal costs for the future and can respond to unforeseen operational opportunities and changes
  • Responsible for ensuring all new and refurbished buildings meet all legislation, standards and Gallery policies such as health, safety, accessibility, energy management and sustainability
  • Responsible for leading and directing The Gallery’s in-house delivery team ensuring the optimal use of resources available in human, financial and system terms, while performance managing and ensuring their continuous development
  • To deputise in the absence of the Head of Buildings

Knowledge, skills, experience

  • Demonstrable experience of delivering complex and diverse projects from concept through to completion on heritage sites and/or Grade 1 listed buildings
  • Demonstrable experience of leading and managing multi-disciplinary teams
  • Demonstrable experience of managing external building contracts
  • Ability to produce project plans using Microsoft Project
  • Ability to demonstrate a knowledge of procurement and engagement of construction design professionals, in support of major capital projects and work programmes
  • Ability to demonstrate CPD to keep abreast of latest changes and development in areas such as sustainability, CDM legislation, project management, energy management, H&S etc
  • Ability to plan programmes financially and manage significant budgets
  • Ability to demonstrate excellent written and oral communication skills in order to write and present robust and comprehensive business cases
  • Calm and confident when dealing with difficult issues
  • Strong commitment to delivering high quality work
  • Collaborative; builds and maintains strong working relationships both internally and externally
  • Personable and approachable to help build positive and effective relationships.
  • Degree or equivalent in a relevant building/construction discipline
  • Member of a recognised building/construction related professional body: CIOB, RIBA, RICS or CIBSE
  • Ability to demonstrate knowledge of preventive conservation and the impact of building works on high worth items (i.e. paintings)
