Support press activity for the National Theatre’s three stages, touring work and Learning programmes.

The National Theatre’s mission is to make world-class theatre, for everyone. We create and share unforgettable stories with audiences across the UK and around the world - whether on our stages on London's South Bank, on tour, in schools, on cinema screens, or streaming at home. We aim to be as inclusive, diverse and sustainable as possible. We are looking for a Assistant Communications Officer to join the National Theatre's Communications team.

The Assistant Communications Officer plays a pivotal role in supporting the Communications team to execute creative media campaigns, as well as administrative and operational activities, that help deliver the National Theatre’s communications strategy. This is a hands-on role requiring a proactive, can-do approach. Working closely with the Communications Manager, Corporate and Campaigns, you will support integrated press and communications campaigns across key priorities, especially around our Learning programmes, while also underpinning the administrative needs of the wider Communications team. This role will also work closely with the Show Publicity team to support campaigns across our three stages and on tour. This will include the preparation and distribution of press and internal materials, facilitating interview logistics, handling incoming enquiries and requests, maintaining records and documents, processing and archive management of production and publicity images, delivering business processes, monitoring media coverage, supporting events, and undertaking research.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Support in the creation of press campaigns that showcase the NT’s work, including drafting and distributing press and listings releases, coming up with social media assets and managing publicity images.
  • Help to secure impactful media coverage through creative storytelling, including generating ideas, preparing briefing notes and press lists, and pitching to journalists.
  • Spot and develop opportunities to grow audiences and raise the NT’s profile with new publications, including around events such as press conferences, special projects and press nights.
  • Build strong relationships with media, creative teams and colleagues across the organisation, and deal with queries and requests effectively and in a friendly manner.
  • Keep press operations running smoothly, including leading on various organisational tasks such as maintaining databases and financial systems, updating the website, managing RSVPs and tickets, facilitating interview logistics, and managing photography and filming at the NT.
  • Monitor press stories and topical issues, distribute daily cuts and weekly highlights emails, and report on the impact of the press campaigns.
  • Pick up a range of other tasks to support priorities as and when needed, supporting the wider Communications team.

The successful candidates will have the following:

  • Experience in PR, media or internal communications.
  • Demonstrable planning, administrative and organisational skills including the ability to manage a busy workload, multiple priorities, deadlines and fast-changing demands
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Meticulous attention to detail, combined with the ability to respond to daily demands effectively and efficiently
  • Collaborative team player who thrives in a busy environment.

If that sounds like you, then we would love to hear from you!

We welcome and encourage applications from candidates who are under-represented in the creative industries.
