Lead the development and production of original digital content that brings the National Theatre to online audiences.

The National Theatre (NT) makes theatre that entertains and inspires using its creativity, expertise and unique reach. We share unforgettable stories with millions of audience members across the UK and around the world – on our own stages, on tour, in schools, on cinema screens and streaming at home.

The Senior Original Content Producer will lead the development and delivery of original digital content formats for online audiences, overseeing projects from concept through to successful execution. Working collaboratively with stakeholders across the organisation and external creative partners, the role will bring together diverse expertise to create high-quality content across multiple strands of activity, ensuring projects are delivered efficiently, creatively and to a consistently high standard.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Lead the development, production and delivery of Digital Original content formats - series, one-offs and recurring strands - optimised for YouTube, NT at Home and social platforms (TikTok, Instagram, etc.)
  • Own the end-to-end production process for Digital Originals, from format development and pitching through to shooting, editing, publishing and post-launch iteration in collaboration with production Manager and wider Producing and Editing teams
  • Use platform data and audience analytics to inform format development, creative decisions, editing choices and publishing strategy - treating data as a core creative input, not just a reporting tool
  • Apply a test-and-learn, iterative approach to content production: launch formats quickly, monitor performance, and refine or pivot based on evidence rather than committing to long-form, fully pre-planned production cycles
  • Identify, build and manage relationships with Creators and talent relevant to NT's digital audiences, enabling collaborations that extend reach and credibility on YouTube and social platforms
  • Develop formats and content specifically shaped by platform-native conventions and behaviours (YouTube retention/discovery mechanics, TikTok/short-form vertical storytelling, etc.), rather than adapting broadcast/TV-style content for digital
  • Work closely with Marketing, Audience Data, Programming and NT at Home colleagues to align Digital Originals output with subscriber growth, engagement and revenue targets
  • Manage production budgets for Originals content, ensuring efficient, scalable production models that support a high-frequency content pipeline alongside Production Manager
  • Line-manage and/or oversee freelance and in-house production talent (e.g. producers, edit assistants, shooters) as required, fostering a collaborative and iterative creative culture
  • Stay current on platform algorithm changes, emerging formats, and competitor/creator activity across YouTube, TikTok and other relevant platforms, feeding trends back into NT's content strategy
  • Ensure all content produced reflects NT's brand, editorial standards and rights/compliance requirements, while pushing for creative distinctiveness on digitalnative platforms
  • Lead and develop teams of highly performing and highly skilled staff. Support team members to perform at a consistently high level and that they deliver on strategic objectives
  • Be a brand champion of Filmed Theatre for NT Live, NT at Home and NT Collection at the NT, and across respective industries
  • Support the National Theatre’s communication objectives by presenting information to your manager, team and colleagues as appropriate
  • Comply with the National’s Equal Opportunities and Health and Safety policies at all times
  • Any other duties as reasonably required

The successful candidate will have the following:

  • Significant previous experience as a digital producer/creative, with a strong portfolio of Digital Original formats produced for YouTube, TikTok or other social-first platforms.
  • Demonstrable experience growing and scaling original digital formats/channels - track record of audience growth, engagement or subscriber/revenue metrics tied to their work.
  • Strong data literacy: comfortable interpreting platform analytics (YouTube Studio, TikTok analytics, etc.) and using that data to make creative and editorial decisions.
  • Experience managing talent and/or Creators, including maintaining productive working relationships with external contributors.
  • Proven ability to work in a test-and-learn, iterative production environment - comfortable with rapid production cycles, ongoing format refinement, and learning from underperforming content rather than treating it as failure.
  • A "digital-native" producer mindset - deeply understands social/YouTube content conventions, pacing, and audience behaviour, as distinct from a broadcast/TV production background.

If that sounds like you, this may be the role for you!
