Assistant editor
Salary: £26,000 - £28,000

Location: The role will be based at our London office, Carmelite House, with a blend of in-office (3 days) and homeworking (2 days) per week.

Little, Brown/Abacus is one of the most commercially successful literary imprints in the industry, with a list full of major literary bestsellers and internationally influential voices in fiction, memoir, history and smart thinking.
Virago has been championing books by women since 1973 and is one of the most iconic and recognisable brands in UK publishing, publishing fiction, biography, politics and modern classics.
What you’ll be doing
- Managing publication of projects from receipt of manuscript to finished product; ensuring high quality, cost-controlled, timely publication in all cases
- Liaising with authors, freelancers and internal teams
- Writing cover copy and reading submissions, contributing to internal meetings
- Supporting the smooth running of the Abacus and Virago imprints, working for the Abacus Publisher, Abacus and Virago Publishing Director, Virago Chair and one editor
Knowledge, skills, experience
- The ideal candidate will have some publishing experience at editorial assistant level, and most importantly in desk editing, i.e., managing copy-edits, collating proofs and putting together prelims
- Motivated, flexible and cheerful
- Passionate about literary fiction and non-fiction, and culture in general
- Have excellent general knowledge
- Highly organised with a meticulous eye for detail
- Able to multitask and prioritise effectively
- Confident, with excellent written and verbal communication skills
- A competent administrator with knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook
