Curatorial assistant

Term: full-Time, permanent
Salary: £24,880 - £27,820 per annum (inclusive of London Weighting) depending on skills and experience
Barbican Art Gallery are looking for an experienced and highly motivated individual to provide organisational and curatorial support on our programme of exhibitions, commissions, publications, and events!
One of the leading art spaces in the UK, Barbican Art Gallery, presents the best of international visual art with a dynamic mix of modern and contemporary art, architecture, design and photography. Barbican’s second space, The Curve, is dedicated to a vibrant programme of new commissions by leading international artists.
Responsibilities
- Researching, compiling and writing material relating to exhibitions or Curve commissions, including: correspondence; exhibition databases; interpretive texts; minutes; reports and book content as necessary
- Liaising with lenders, artists and other stakeholders
- Carrying out loans administration, including securing details of insurance valuations and display requirements from artists, lenders and others, as required by the Curatorial team, and also for packing and transport requirements
- Contributing ideas to the development of the Public Programme, and carrying out the realisation of these events, within budget and schedule
- Supporting the wider Curatorial team in developing and nurturing excellent relationships with artists and contributors
- Supporting the Curatorial team with the inputting of information on Artifax (events management software) as required for events
- Gathering and returning photographic and digital material, contacting agencies and image providers as necessary, dealing with requests regarding reproduction rights and copyright for the purposes of publications, press and marketing
- Collating and circulating approved images
- Collating information required for press purposes and liaising with staff of the Marketing and Communications departments
- Supporting the Curatorial team in planning the architectural design and graphic design of exhibitions, liaising with external architects and designers
- Working to schedules set for the planning, installation and take down of exhibitions
- Assisting in the installation and de-installation of exhibitions, in such tasks as condition checking of artworks as required, whether at Barbican or partner venues
- Organising the framing of exhibits as necessary
- Inputting, monitoring and updating information on the Gallery’s exhibition database and other systems
- Assisting in the preparation and writing of exhibition labels and interpretative texts for specific exhibitions as required and co-ordinating production of the same
- Carrying out accurate provenance research in compliance with due diligence procedures and best practice and generating reports
- Organising exhibition installation photography
- Giving exhibition tours to the public and other stakeholders
- Assisting the Curatorial team with the drafting and administration of contracts
Knowledge, skills, experience
- The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate an excellent knowledge of art and contemporary exhibition practice
- Have either a post-graduate arts degree combined with some relevant experience, or demonstrable experience of working in an art gallery, curatorial work and/or published writing
- This role requires a basic DBS check
