Head of Royal Northern College of Music Young Artists
Salary grade: Grade 8a SCP 36 to 39, £40,927 to £44,706 per annum (actual pro-rata salary £16,370 to £17,882 per annum)
3 year fixed-term contract – 0.4 FTE – 14 hours per week
Royal Northern College of Music (RNCM) Young Artists is a new programme of training and support for pop musicians aged 11-18 from across the North West. You could become the first head of the programme!
Launching in September 2022, the new Saturday school will provide young people with life-changing opportunities to explore their talent and achieve their potential, while making music training from the very best tutors, mentors, and artists, accessible to all.
Designed and delivered by the College’s world-renowned Popular Music Department, RNCM Young Artists will offer year-round weekly sessions focused on composition, production, and performance, led by the faculty and student mentors.
With full access to the fully equipped, state-of-the-art recording and producing studios situated in the College’s central Manchester campus, RNCM Young Artists will work in bands, creating, recording, and distributing original music and sharing their work in showcases at the College and in professional venues in Manchester.
The RNCM is determined to reach and support young people from all backgrounds and will work with partners in local communities to grow a diverse and creative community of musicians, with financial support in place where needed.
We are seeking to appoint the first Head of RNCM Young Artists – a dynamic and inspiring leader, manager, educator, and industry professional, who will direct the programme, recruit students from diverse backgrounds, and cultivate their artistic development and innovation in performance, composition, and production.

Knowledge, skills, experience
Essential
- A professional musician with experience in at least two core disciplines – performance / composition / production
- Significant experience of Popular Music tuition with students aged 11- 18
- Significant experience of supervision and assessment of students aged 11-18
- Professional level of performance, composition and production skills
- Excellent communication and organisational skills with an ability to manage staff and RNCM student mentors
- Ability to recruit students
- To be able to contribute to all facets of the curriculum
- Professional level of knowledge of popular music performance, composition and production
- An understanding of popular music pedagogy, the contemporary popular music industry and relevant current research
- An understanding of monitoring processes and quality assurance
- A knowledge of today’s popular music profession; its standards and demands
- A professional network that may enhance the programme and students’ career development
- Educated to degree level and / or equivalent relevant professional experience
Desirable
- Experience of managing tutor teams
- Experience of working in community-based projects with students aged 11-18
- Experience of contributing to the development of the strategy
- An awareness of the broader educational issues in the 11-18 sector
