Publishing intern
Salary/bursary: London Living Wage equivalent (£17,000 per annum tax-free bursary)

Do you love contemporary fiction? Want to learn more about how the book trade works from a leading publisher?
In this 6-month internship with the Aria imprint at Head of Zeus, you'll learn the ins and outs of publishing from acquisition to publication. Aria is one of the UK’s leading contemporary Fiction publishers, and home to bestselling authors including Faith Hogan, Dani Atkins, Julie Houston and Diney Costeloe. No prior experience in publishing is required.
What you'll learn
A 360 editorial perspective on trade publishing, from acquisition to publication and backlist strategy, in particular:
- Desk editing, including copy editing and proofreading processes
- Publishing strategy and copywriting
- Marketing strategy and C-Suite asset creation
- Acquisition strategy and process
How you'll learn this
- Through booking copyeditors and proofreaders
- Understanding how to collate proofs
- Updating AIs (advanced information sheets) as requested by editor
- Drafting paperback (or secondary format) cover copy
- Sales material and catalogue proofreading
- Preparing prelims
- Second sign off and to-print checks
- Creating marketing and sales material
- Creating campaign round-ups for authors
- Creating and uploading A+ pages to Amazon
- Ad hoc assistance on other fiction titles
Departmental responsibilities
- Reading and reporting on new submissions as requested
- Ad hoc support on admin, marketing and sales material for wider fiction team
- Assist the management of the open submission process as and when required
What we're looking for
- Energetic, responsible, organised
- Excellent communication and written skills with a good grasp of spelling and grammar
- Able to prioritise a busy workload
- An interest in popular fiction
- An interest in gaining an understanding of the publishing industry

Aria have a hybrid work policy and ask its employees to work in-house at the Clerkenwell office two days a week. The ideal candidate would be able to do so on Mondays and Wednesdays, to crossover with the Commissioning Editor. However, staff are welcome to work in-house as many days as they wish.
