Permanent position
Entry
£25,000 to £30,000 per year

Closing date: Wednesday 28th June

Salary range: £24,725 – £26,875 pro rata (depending on experience)

Contract: Permanent, part-time, at least 20–24 hours per week (equivalent to 2.5–3 days per week), with working hours and days to be mutually agreed upon.

Start date: August 2023

This is an exciting opportunity for someone in the early stages of their publishing career to join our busy, dynamic indie press.

As a production assistant, you will be reporting directly to our Production Director and will play an essential role at every stage of production, assisting on both general-interest and academic books. As we are a close-knit team, you will also gain insight into Editorial, Sales & Marketing and Publicity, working closely with those colleagues.

Responsibilities

  • Taking the lead on author management during production;
  • Checking and marking up proof corrections;
  • Liaising with our production partners, e.g. typesetters, proofreaders & indexers;
  • Commissioning maps to illustrate our books;
  • Managing our files for eBooks, other electronic platforms & marketing assets;
  • Commissioning cover designs for press review copies;
  • Text production for paperback editions.

Knowledge, skills, and experience

  • Knowledge of and interest in global current affairs
  • Excellent written communication skills, and a good eye for detail
  • Outstanding levels of organisation and capacity for independent work
  • Strong interpersonal skills, and ability to learn fast in a small team
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office

Hurst has a hybrid model, with each staff member working both from home and in our office at Somerset House, Central London. The role can be based anywhere, including fully office-based if preferred, but at a minimum you must be able to travel to London or Brighton once a fortnight to work in person with the Production Director, and to travel to London once a month to work in person with the whole team.

Please note: we can only consider candidates with the permanent right to work in the UK.

Please submit a cover letter and CV to Daisy Leitch via clicking the 'Apply' button by midnight BST on Wednesday 28 June. Shortlisted candidates will be contacted the week of 3 July to complete a test and invited to interviews (held the week of 17 July).

We welcome and encourage applications from candidates who are under-represented in the creative industries.

Please state in your application that you found this role through Creative Access.
