Production assistant (part-time)
Closing date: Wednesday 28th June
Salary range: £24,725 – £26,875 pro rata (depending on experience)
Contract: Permanent, part-time, at least 20–24 hours per week (equivalent to 2.5–3 days per week), with working hours and days to be mutually agreed upon.
Start date: August 2023
This is an exciting opportunity for someone in the early stages of their publishing career to join our busy, dynamic indie press.
As a production assistant, you will be reporting directly to our Production Director and will play an essential role at every stage of production, assisting on both general-interest and academic books. As we are a close-knit team, you will also gain insight into Editorial, Sales & Marketing and Publicity, working closely with those colleagues.
Responsibilities
- Taking the lead on author management during production;
- Checking and marking up proof corrections;
- Liaising with our production partners, e.g. typesetters, proofreaders & indexers;
- Commissioning maps to illustrate our books;
- Managing our files for eBooks, other electronic platforms & marketing assets;
- Commissioning cover designs for press review copies;
- Text production for paperback editions.
Knowledge, skills, and experience
- Knowledge of and interest in global current affairs
- Excellent written communication skills, and a good eye for detail
- Outstanding levels of organisation and capacity for independent work
- Strong interpersonal skills, and ability to learn fast in a small team
- Familiarity with Microsoft Office
Hurst has a hybrid model, with each staff member working both from home and in our office at Somerset House, Central London. The role can be based anywhere, including fully office-based if preferred, but at a minimum you must be able to travel to London or Brighton once a fortnight to work in person with the Production Director, and to travel to London once a month to work in person with the whole team.
