Penguin Books UK - The Scheme traineeship
Closing date: 21st June 2023 by 5 pm
The Scheme is for voices we want to hear more of in publishing. Could yours be one of them?
Make your mark by spending six months between Sept 23-March 24 working with the best at the leading UK publisher. You’ll immerse yourself within either our Sales, Publicity or Editorial business areas, geared up to support you as you make decisions for yourself and contribute to our shared mission to make books for everyone.
With us you’ll find support and a deep sense of purpose. Whatever team you’re placed with, you’ll gain universally applicable skills that will equip you for wherever you go next. We’ll teach you about publishing and Penguin, just start here.
All trainees are paid £24,000 per annum (equivalent to £12,000 for the six months of the traineeship). We also offer financial support for those commuting from outside of London.
Eligibility criteria
It’s not a requirement to have completed any formal work experience in or outside of the publishing industry or have a degree qualification.
You’ll need to have a pre-existing the right to work in the UK for the duration of the traineeship as unfortunately we are not able to offer visa sponsorship. You’ll also need to be over 18.
The programme will run as a positive action scheme (under the Equality Act 2010) for groups that are currently underrepresented in Penguin, so you’ll need to identify as one, or both, of the following:
Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic Groups
To apply, you’ll identify as one of the following:
- Asian/British Asian
- Black/African/Caribbean/Black British
- Mixed/Multiple ethnic groups
- Another minority ethnic group
Lower socio-economic background
You’ll either have been eligible for free school meals, or at age 14 your highest-earning parent/guardian was not self-employed or in senior management, and was employed in one of the following categories:
- Technical and craft occupations such as: motor mechanic, fitter, inspector, plumber, printer, tool maker, electrician, gardener, train driver
- Semi-routine manual and service occupations such as: postal worker, machine operative, security guard, caretaker, farm worker, catering assistant, receptionist, sales assistant
- Routine manual and service occupations such as: HGV driver, van driver, cleaner, porter, packer, sewing machinist, messenger, labourer, waiter/waitress, bar staff
- Unemployed but seeking work
We recognise these are broad categories that generalise from the many hundreds of jobs out there, and they may not exactly fit your family situation – an example of where this definition may not fit for you, is if you’re a care leaver or your family went through a divorce which changed your financial position, to name a few examples. Please use your judgement when self-identifying.
Our application process
Because our doors are open to all kinds of talent, we’re using the inclusive hiring platform Applied to ask three questions about the universal skills we call ‘qualities’. You’ll answer a few short questions on the platform.
If you’re successful you’ll attend our online learning and selection day in July, where you’ll be assessed on the rest of the qualities, get to know some of your potential colleagues, and come away with some helpful resources for the future.
We will then offer the successful candidates their placements and get you onboarded ready for a great induction on your start date!
We will provide reasonable adjustments to those with a disability at all stages of the recruitment process and encourage any requests that will make the process more comfortable for you.
