We are seeking a social media intern to assist with our strategy to extend the reach of The Economist’s journalism on digital platforms.
The audience team is at the heart of The Economist’s strategy to ensure our digital presence becomes as strong as our print heritage. It publishes content to social media, produces a growing portfolio of newsletters and sends push alerts to our apps. It assists the Newsdesk with the management of our wider digital operation, as well as seeking opportunities to reach new audiences and increase engagement among existing subscribers.
Ever more people are encountering our journalism for the first time on Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn or YouTube, where our accounts have a total of nearly 60m followers. However, size is not everything and we want to do more to turn this audience into the next generation of subscribers.
This one-year fellowship is an entry-level position with a salary of £26,000. It will be based in our main newsroom in central London but with a specific remit to reach audiences in North America, while remaining true to our 179-year-old brand.
The successful candidate will be an innovative, unstoppable news-hound with an interest in, and knowledge of, current affairs, politics and finance around the world, but particularly in North America. They will have suggestions for how we can tailor our content for a uniquely American audience and knowledge of the regional media landscape. They might have some junior experience as a journalist, either through internships or perhaps for a university newsroom, or have experience in telling engaging stories on-line. Importantly, they will understand how The Economist’s brand and social-media output fit into the global media landscape—and how we cover events such as the mid-term elections, the hearings of Congress’s January 6th 2021 committee, the threat to abortion rights and the Federal Reserve’s attempts to rein in inflation.

The production intern will take on a role producing research to help the editorial team and presenters make their weekly show. You will also receive training in key systems such as iNews and Silvermouse and develop basic editing skills. The intern will be given the opportunity to shadow the programme producers and production manager, which will allow them to learn how to support the team’s management and administration requirements, gain television production experience and develop journalistic skills.
Hours will be spread across five days per week and will frequently include late evening work on Wednesdays.

As the resident orchestra of the Barbican Centre, the LSO presents some 70 concerts here each year, performing the highest quality music from the core symphonic repertoire, as well as music by living or lesser-known composers. The London Symphony Orchestra has an opportunity for someone wishing to take a first step into the world of arts administration, and fundraising in particular, as part of a 12 month placement. The role will offer an opportunity to work across the LSO’s busy Development department, gaining experience in all areas of the team’s work, including Individual Giving, Corporate fundraising, Events, and Trust &amp; Foundations fundraising.

What you'll be doing
Project assistance and support
<ul>
<li>Learn and assist with the delivery of membership scheme benefits, including ticket bookings, event invitations and responses, production of guest lists, and general preparation for events and concerts, both digital and live</li>
<li>Learn and assist with correspondence and mailings across the Development team</li>
<li>Learn and maintain accurate donor and corporate details using Raiser's Edge database</li>
<li>Undertake research, including benchmarking against other organisations and building profiles of prospects and prospective funders</li>
<li>Produce regular business and philanthropic updates for use by the team</li>
</ul>
Other experience
<ul>
<li>Undertaking occasional concert duty, supporting Development events at the Barbican and occasionally elsewhere</li>
<li>Assisting with other department activities and fundraising events</li>
</ul>
 
Knowledge, skills, experience
Essential
<ul>
<li>A strong interest in fundraising and relationship management</li>
<li>Excellent organisation and administrative skills with meticulous attention to detail</li>
<li>Strong communication skills with the ability to convey ideas and information to a range of target groups and present a case articulately and concisely both orally and in writing</li>
<li>Ability to plan effectively, setting up and maintaining systems to make best use of time and resources</li>
<li>Highly motivated to work effectively both under own initiative and within a team</li>
<li>Flexible attitude to work – prepared to help out with other department tasks where necessary</li>
<li>Proficiency in use of Microsoft Office</li>
<li>Excellent level of numeracy</li>
<li>Enthusiastic and positive mental attitude</li>

Desirable

<li>Some previous experience gained in the arts, media or broadcasting sectors</li>

Development assistant

Contract: this post is offered on a fixed-term 12-month contract
 
We are looking for someone who is passionate about theatre and wants to build a career in marketing to join our marketing and communications team for this 12-month training role. 
You will gain practical and hands-on experience and have a chance to learn about different aspects of how we create and deliver our campaigns to promote the theatre and build new audiences.
